So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

While we were standing guard@ our local recruiting center in Paducah, KY, a guy came up , said he was a Vietnam combat vet , wanting to help. As with all the Patriots , we told him to go inside the recruiters office & let them make a copy of his I.D. . He hesitated a little, and said he didn't have his wallet with him,& would come back the next day. I could plainly see the outline of a wallet in his back pocket, so I got his license# , & had a police officer friend run the plate. Turned out he was a convicted felon, born in 1959. That would have made him about 16 years old when the Vietnam war ended. Needless to say we never saw him again!

Have never seen one myself, but my son wore his great grandfathers WW2 vintage uniform hat, his great uncles Korea era jacket and pants one year for Halloween, bear in mind, he did his best to wear them well out of respect, and must have achieved it because as he was taking his younger brother around town trick or treating, he had some lady thank him for his service. He stopped her and explained his "uniform" and that he wasn't even old enough to serve. She took it well.

I've been debating about answering this question all day because I'm not entirely certain. My husband and I were at a local dollar store just looking around and this guy walks in and he's friendly enough. Engaging in conversation with the patrons in the store, and I'm not sure HOW it got brought up, but at one point, whilst husband and I were standing in queue at the register waiting to make our purchase and go, said gentleman brings up - with a big smile on his face - about all his scars, that he'd been "over there" and had "seen some sh*t" and I remember thinking, "Huh. I happen to know at least two combat vets that aren't as upbeat about what they saw and endured. They don't smile and laugh about it." HE DID. I glance over at my husband who looks like he wants to go over and say something, and I had to whisper, "Don't. Just.. Let it go." Husband never saw combat, BUT he did serve in the ING (Idaho Nat'l Guard) for two years and then active-duty in the Army for 6 before getting out in 98. I, personally, wasn't able to serve, but I wanted to go Air Force. Unfortunately I can't, and it sucks, but it does bother me a great deal when I see people who claim to be something they aren't, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the military. Whether this guy DID, in fact, serve, I don't know, I don't even know him by name. That was the first - and only - time I've ever seen him. I'm not sure if he was just on some REALLY GOOD medication that helped him through the day-to-day, but even then? I don't think there's a pill strong enough to help someone who'd legit seen combat come back and be a-okay. But, that's just me and my skepticism. I don't know.

There have been times I've seen posers, then there are the true Stolen Valor idiots!!
Then there are the ones that want to be military, or just like military stuff!
My sons have been into military stuff since they were little, as they got older, (I'll give a way my age), I gave them my old BDUs, they wore them proudly knowing they were mine in the real Army.
They've had friends that are posers though and get mad at them, I told them to just blow it off, they don't know any better.
A couple of times I've ran into guys trying to pass themselves as being "Heros", one guy tried to say he was in SF in Vietnam!!! Shut him down right away by asking his unit, he didn't have a clue...
It does make my blood boil when I hear people try to talk about their "kills"!!! I've never personally been in combat but have friends that have been. There have only been a couple of times they open up about it...
Definitely not something you ask about in public or brag about!!!

No one wears an EGA without earning it, don't care if they're posing or not. If you want to "wear your favorite teams jersey" go get a tshirt, or a hoodie, DO NOT go buy Marpat Cammies, DO NOT go buy a 7 point, and do NOT wear a name tape that says USMC, and especially do not wear an official looking EGA on any piece of uniform attire. You didn't earn that shit, you don't rate.

Veteran's Day is the worst with the free meals. When asked about branch, MOS and/or unit they provide untruthful or ridiculous answers. One guy claimed service in the Army but did not know what MOS was nor did he know what SOS was even though I had it on my plate in front of him.
