So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I am appalled that he called himself a chief petty officer. I just wish he knew what a person goes through to become a CPO. I don't think this gutter snipe could hack it!!

After I retired from the Coast Guard I was working as as a safety manager at a boat building company. We had a number of people who worked for us who were ether former service members or current active reserves. Most of us had seen service in the middle east or Bosnia (I was attached to the Navy for two tours during the Gulf war and one off the coast of Bosnia) we also had two Viet Nam vets. Any service talk was among our selves mostly small talk. One of the guys came to me one day and said that XXXX was talking crap about being in a special ops unit and relating fantastic stories of great bravado. I asked a nonservice person if they had heard any of these stories and he said that he had. I asked XXXX to stop by the office when he had a chance. When he did I asked him about it. He told me that it was a very top secret unit and that he could not talk about it. I told him that I had a Top Secret clearance (I did once upon a time). I asked him what branch and he was very vague. I asked him what his rank was he told me that he was a Tech Sargent. I asked if he wouldn't mind bringing me a copy of his DD-214 he answered " My what?" At that point I asked him to cease and desist with the BS stories. A real spec ops person would rarely talk about it to anyone let alone the general public. He never to my knowledge talked about it again but he must have commented to someone about our conversation. One of the other guys who worked near him came and thanked me for speaking with XXXX as he currently at that time had a son in the Army in Iraq doing patrols. As a parent it really bothered bothered him to listen to these braggart stories knowing what his own son was doing and the seriousness of it.

While I have only run into one sometime ago, the best poser story I have heard was not mine but that of COL Roger Donlon. We happened to live close to each other once upon a Time and he told me of a story where he was at a parade, I believe a Memorial Day parade, and the Parade Marshall was a veteran. It turns out COL Donlon was standing next to the man's father who started speaking with him and telling him all about his son and his heroics in Vietnam. Apparently as the story progressed the man then said his son had not only earned the Medal of Honor but had in fact earned the first one awarded for service in Vietnam. I don't quite recall what COL Donlon said his reaction was but it must have been a good one as he in fact was the first awarded for service in Vietnam.
