So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

Ask him where he went to basic and AIT. There were only so many BT posts back then.

I think a ran into my first stolen valor dude last week camping with the kids. He had a bdu cap with a cross and a major rank. He had to have been 70 years old. I asked him what service he was in. He told me Air Force reserve (Chaplin) and that he flew F105s and F4s in Vietnam. I asked him if it was State Military Reserve, he said no, the Air Force Reserve. He then got into stories about how he was Forced to bailout of his F4 in theater and how his son flew an F111 out of England and let him copilot it for a practice bombing run over Scotland. What did not add up for me was that I asked that he must have at least an Air Medal for that kind of tour in Vietnam. He said he did not earn one Air Medal. My dad earned the Air Medal OLC for flying radio relay KC-135s in theatre. I will stand corrected if my hunch is wrong. Can my Air Force brother chime-in on this?

I was in the Navy starting in 72. I can recognize most of the awards, and ribbons from the Nam era. I have no clue how to recognize campaign ribbons and Army and Marine insignias and unit designations. Hell some soldiers have ribbons on both sides. I can recognize special forces most of the time. Having explained that, I pretty much can recognize false valor by the demeanor and stories. Those who had a rough time rarely boast about it. Im proud of all Veterans and those that choose to pretend, have a special place in hell waiting for them.

Yes, they're usually pretty easy to spot. Normally their hair cut is not in regs, they're wearing the uniform, especially decs, wrong, and they carry themselves in a way that's haughty, and just wrong.

Maj, I retired from 20yrs 4 mos of service in the USAF. I s
erved from '71-'91, and am a Vietnam Vet. I've had hair down to the middle of my back and a beard also. So, you can't always go by looks.

XThis picture must be staged. No one can get a uniform so screwed up. This should be like those puzzles in magazines here your have to find all the errors.
