So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

Not lately. I sometimes wear my DCU boonie-hat to work and school. I use by bug-out ruck to carry books and laptop now instead of water and extra ammo. Sometimes people ask me what I did in Iraq and tell them that I worked Civil Affairs and later was the Chief of the Battalion Public Health Team. I like conversing with my brother and sister veterans, especially those who served in country during the same time period. If someone is posing as a veteran, I usually let them do all the talking and see just how full of crap they are. One can usually tell who 'has seen the elephant' and who is talking trash.

A couple years ago I was the Quartermaster at the local VFW. There were many "regular" members who were not eligible but had been allowed to join to keep membership numbers up. Of course I had a problem with that having served thirty years, both Army and Air Force, and two wars, myself, so I made sure any new members were legit. So, we had an older guy (within 10 years of my age and I was born in 1960) come in claiming to be a regular member and wanting to transfer to our post. I had him fill out a transfer form and asked for a copy of his 214 for the files. He eventually produce a very heavily blacked out/redacted copy of an old 214, along with voluntarily adding copies of his VA ID card and his current VFW card. According to the 214 he was Army and the dates served were in the 50's. I was very skeptical especially since one of the things blacked out was the date of birth, and he was bragging about having been a POW in Vietnam, then offered to tell us how he got away. No where in any of the POW lists could I find his name. I finally asked to see his driver's license which was a completely different state from his address or previous address. According to his DL and the dates on the 214, he would have joined the Army at the age of FIVE and ets'd at the age of TEN! When I confronted him about it he said "Well that's what the Marine Corp gave me!" I told him I was not going to transfer him because he was not only not eligible to be a member, but I didn't believe he had ever served. He then told me the 214 belonged to his brother. The last VFW post he belonged to had elected Post Commander and the guys at my post were pissed at me because I wouldn't transfer this poser POS to our post!! BTW, I reported him to VFW National so he couldn't transfer elsewhere and to the VA for the fake VA ID card, which the VA told me was very easy to fake.
