So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

Yes, but not in uniform. On several occasions I have encountered people who were obviously lying about their service. I generally ignore them but did confront 2 of them because their lies were so outrageous and they were "holding court" for people in a bar. One claimed to have been a Marine and wounded in combat and the other in the Air Force also in combat in Vietnam. In both cases they were embarrassed and walked away.

Yeah, I saw a person posing. It was my brother. He served in the national guard for all of a year and a half. He was dishonorably discharged after going awol and steeling a military sedan. I incouraged his commander to prosecute he needed the lesson. They chose to get rid of him instead. Maybe 20 years later, his Facebook page is littered with his 20 years of combat service with MSMs, ARCOMs, and deeds of heroism. I confronted him and my mother on it. And I was literally told that he could remember his service anyway he wanted and why was I being so cruel. I pointed out that I have military brothers and sisters who have died serving our country and this dishonors them and their service. They disowned me.

I live in a small town in North Texas. I had the honor to wear the uniform for 24 years. About a year after I retired from the military, I was working at the local employment office and had a young individual come into the office wearing a variety of Army unit badges on a Vest purporting to be a Ranger Veteran.

He asked to speak to the Veteran Representative and then sat down waiting for his turn. After speaking to him for a few minutes, it was obvious that his military exposure was minimal. I called him on his purported Ranger affiliation which threw him off. I explained that I may be a Navy Veteran, but because I had been medical, I had taught in a Tri-Service course, had completed a lovely year at Fort Sam Houston (for graduate studies) and had deployed with the Army to Afghanistan.

It was also obvious that this was a troubled young person. I told him that it was better to be himself, most people would respect him more for what he did than for pretending he was someone else. He thanked me and we interacted several times after that.

You can talk the talk or even walk the walk. Even soldiers and marines are full of bullshit embellishing their service. It's known fact that it takes more logistics and personnel to support a grunt or an infantry Unit. Just admit that most of you mouthing off were combat support. I know I was. I served in Vietnam and all of Vietnam was declared a war zone. Only 2% of the military serve in combat.
