So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

One thing to bear in mind is that officers don't have MOS's, they have branches. So, if you ask a veteran for an MOS and he/she hesitates, they might be an officer. Also, some MOS numbers got changed around, I believe over the last 50 years, but it's a start. they ought to know what the hell you're talking about.

Met a guy who had his whole town of Parkersburg WV convinced he was a retired Marine Corps Colonel and former Blue Angels #1. He even had pictures of the demo team from multiple eras. He had several of him flying the jet. I asked him which model his aircraft was. He replied, it's an A-7 C son....to which I laughed in his face and called him out. Just so happens I refurbished 46 A-4 Skyhawks for sale to the Malaysian Air Force, knew the jet like the back of my hand. He just doubled down on the lie. Classic POS! Turns out he washed out of Basic Training. Turd.

I've seen outright posers, who never served, and have found that there's almost always a pathological issue behind their behavior. I don't typically mess with them - just move on. The ones that bother me are those who have served, but feel it necessary to lie about their MOS or type of deployments, involvement with "special ops," etc. They're the ones who should know better. Even then, it's a matter of self-esteem. One Marine I served with had been a band member all his career - he liked to tell stories about experiences he heard others talk about. It became a game for us to seed little details in war stories we'd tell, just to see when his "experience" would pop up later. Almost always did - it was like he couldn't help himself. Kinda sad, really.

If he is going to lie, at least do enough research to fool a vet with a only a chance to glance at him. If this photo is true, he is a jerk and stupid to boot.
