So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

We have the same issue in the UK, often you will see people at parades or about town wearing full military uniform. As a general rule these people are harmless eccentrics or people with genuine metal illnesses and fill good to dress up as soldiers, sailors or Airman. These people a generally humoured by serving and retired military personnel as they mean no really harm and do not do if for personal or financial gain. Then there are the stolen valor group, known in uk military circles as Walter Mittys or simply walts. These people have either never served or clam to have done far more than they actually did. Often claiming to be SF or some other such nonsense for financial gain or to impress ladies! These guys are genuinely despised by almost all veterans regardless of rank unit or service. I have seen a serving E-4 in the Royal Air Force call out a Walt claiming to be a falklands and GW1 veteran, this idiot it turned out had never served and bought an SAS blazer badge and some medals off EBay to try and pick up chicks. Recently we have seen a people in PCS(U.K. Camo) in shopping malls claiming to work for bogus charity's that help veterans. These guys pray on the public sympathys and are nothing but con men. I saw a video on YouTube of a couple of them coming unstuck in Liverpool when confronted by a former Royal marine.

Yes, I've seen actual military members posing as more than what they were. One actually promoted himself and gave himself a Purple Heart. When he was home on leave he posed for a photo proudly displaying his fake rank and award in his hometown newspaper. Another was caught posing as a SEAL. Neither one of these guys no longer (legally) wears a uniform. We also had a CNO commit suicide because of the embarrassment of wearing medals he didn't earn. The moral here is, you don't have to be a civilian to be a poser.

I can't believe people do this! There time would be better spent helping those who serve us civilians... helping a veteran may not be as heroic or is not heroic at all but you are a notch above the rest. I am a proud son of a father that served!

We have a lot of special needs guys around here that wear surplus clothes all the time. No one here takes offense because they are trying to show support due to them not being allowed to serve. That said none of them lie about serving either.

I have. We have a terrific veterans coffee shop in our town and unfortunately we have to deal with them coming in from time to time. Usually we can weed them out pretty quickly and head them out the door, but every do often s smart one does show up.....
