So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I understand about Veterans wanting to Throat Punch or remove a posers head from his torso. I have felt the same way. I ran into a kid once that was trying to get a military discount at an auto oils change place. It was funny because there were 3 true Veterans sitting in the waiting area when this fool started makibg a scene!

I often see the "Viet Nam era" ball caps, etc. and it kinda makes me sad in a way that a real vet feels he has to create this momentary illusion to enhance his status. As an aside, I was a signal intelligence officer in Nam (9620) who also had an infantry MOS (graduate of the Benning School for Boys). We were not allowed to wear MI insignia in Nam so I started out with crossed rifles as cover. After a couple of months in country with no CIB, I got one too many quizzical looks and decided to switch to signal corps insignia. End of problem. Never felt right wearing the infantry insignia. (67-68, Pleiku).

I work at an auto parts store and I had a poser claim he was a Vet and said he served in Vietnam as a air born ranger with the Marines. I called him out on it. he just wanted the discount we give all active service personal and vets.

I have encountered them quite a few times in the past. In my twenty-two years in uniform, I was one of the lucky ones who never saw combat. Even for someone like me it isn't hard for the BS meter to spike. Many use information they read about or heard about from actual combat veterans and can make a pretty accurate story. I have learned that it's the small details that usually stump them. When I suspect anyone of being a wannabe, I try to introduce them to a friend that is an actual veteran. Then the truth usually comes out. My father was a retired Colonel and a WWII combat veteran. He could peg a phony within a few seconds. He used to say; "If you never aimed and fired a rifle at anyone with the intent to kill, you will never fool anyone who has."
