So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

Wow. What part of that is posing as a PO? I don't understand the attraction to doing this and don't they know eventually they will have to run into a real veteran?

Was at a party while home on leave, girl was talking about being a soldier in the military. Never gave a branch. Didn't know I was Active.

Asked her what she did and responded with, "Sniper."
Cool, cool but what's your MOS? "E-5."
Classy.

I happened to stop into a bar in Rochester NY and had a "gentleman" sitting at the bar in full dress uniform with a chest full of medals, claiming to be an admiral. He was intoxicated and hassling these young nurses who had gotten off work from a midnight shift at one of the area hospitals. When asked for his DD form 2 (Military Id) he just looked puzzled and then became aggressive. I escorted him to the rest room and introduced his face to the urinal. Have not seen him since.

SEVERAL......
A huge fat guy outside a flea market in Fayetteville North Carolina.....wearing a black beret....telling war stories to two young troops from Fort Bragg....he finished off with " I went to Master Jump School"....I said if you are going to lie at least get the name right....it is Jumpmaster School.....he blustered and tried to claim that was the "old name"..... I pointed out I served before he was born....and was a graduate of the jump master school..... he walked off mumbling
In a restaurant in the Philippines I was introduced to a "general green beret with nine tours in Vietnam".... as an ex-SF.....I coined him.....he had no clue what the coin meant..... turned out to be an ex-cop from Seattle Washington re-inventing himself
The guy that sued me was 40 year old "retired LTC from the Green Berets" I tolerated his lies for a couple of years.....he could not even identify the SF crest.... BUT when he claimed to be a OBGYN Army trained doctor and started giving free gynecological exams to young women....I had to stop him..... I warned him.....he laughed in my face....so I outed him in the local newspaper.....HE SUED..... every time he made a claim in court....I produce documentation proving him wrong.... turns out he spent 28 days in the military and was discharged as an E-2....
The problem is not just being a phony.....the problem is they are often too stupid to research and uphold the standards....they allow people who do not know REAL heroes to think they are the real thing.... Had a blow hard Flea Market manager who claimed to be a "NAVY SEAL sniper"..... but could barely write his own name....never got out of the third grade..... from my experience you need a GED / high school diploma ....not to mention reading and writing skills to even be in the Navy (I was Army)

You know he was a poser because most who have been there do not volunteer that kind of info.

Only once that I can recall. Was several years ago. The guy claimed to have been a "river rat" with Navy forces in Vietnam. Claimed he was there in 1976. :)

I have seen posers and have ignored them for the most part, but when I see someone trying to get a discount or something they don't deserve I let them know I know they are posers. I then give them the option to walk away and avoid a public incident. I was also accused of stolen valor by a young couple, neither of which ever served, just for wearing my US Army hat with my rank pin and cavalry pin. I was a bit put out but did not make a scene. People pretend to be soldiers mostly for the attention, so don't give it to them by making a big scene. We are professionals and we should behave that way.
