So I saw my first military poser today at Wal-Mart of all places. Had Army ACUs, popped collar, what looked like a white turtleneck and Doc Marten's boots, patrol cap on indoors, no name tapes anywhere, Marine Corps Globe-and-Anchor on his pc, no unit patches and an American flag patch with no stars. I asked him what unit he was in, he responded with being an E-7 petty officer in the Navy.

Annnnnd, go...

I don't see any. Folks do it for many reasons and as long as we understand that we can be adults about it. It's dead wrong to use it for personal gain. It's wrong if it brings discredit to the service or those that have served. I think some go off the deep end with the way they handle it as well. If it bothers you based on the circumstances then handle it tactfully if you feel duty-bound to do so. Public shaming and personal attacks can bring just as much discredit to the service as the offender. Plus, some offenders aren't playing with a full deck and you might get caught up in a bad situation.

If the person was trying to gain financially, or actually telling people they served for any type of remuneration, then i would say that is a problem. I have a Calvary hat with gold braid and a 7th Cav insignia i wear on occasion, it is meant to honor General Custer and the 7th, not to imply i was a member, and when asked about it, i explain that.
