Hello I was wondering if someone could give me insight on the Special Missions Aviation career field.

The Special Missions Aviation career field is meant to be a combination of Aerial Gunner, Load Master and Flight Engineer as I'm sure you're aware. The specific duties you perform vary depending on the platform you are assigned to. Some of the different platforms that are available are the AC-130U, AC-130W, HH-60's, CV-22's and the C-145 and C-146A. Like I said, your duties will vary depending on the platform. With the short time I've been on the C-146A I can say that you will mainly be handling duties of a load master and flight engineer. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Yo, Forte! Came across this while looking for info on the career field. I got accepted and leave in January.

Are MH130s part of the platforms available too? If not, where are the AC130s get stationed overseas? The reason I'm asking is I have to give up my follow on (Kadena) in order to cross train. I would love to get USPACOM if able. I'm researching and it looks like 353rd SOG is stationed there. TIA

I am on UH-1N's and have been up in the missile field for almost 6 years. We primarily do the duties of flight engineers and load masters. Once we are allowed to finally mount our guns on our aircraft, we'll be doing areal gunnery duties as well. Our primary mission is missile field security, but we also get quite a few civilian search and rescues too (average 10-15 saves/year as a squadron). If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Recently I've check the retraining list and I've only seen flight engineer. One of the codes on the list specifies that I have to already be on a aviation career field to apply. Is that the same for Special Missions Aviation? Is there any way around this?

There is a waiver for almost anything in the military. In the past year, my unit has gotten 8 new SMAs from the school house. Only 3 of them came from the "required" feeder AFSCs (1 crew chief, 1 prior areal gunner, and 1 C-5 flight engineer). As long as you meet the other requirements, you can submit an exception to policy letter with your application. Keep in mind that you must also be in your retraining window.

Nick is pretty spot on. Hueys are also a possible airframe. I'm on the CV22 let me know if you have any questions on the rotary side.
