What exactly is going on in "the horn" that requires US military involvement?

There are several Army activities, the principal of which is support and training to East African nations deploying troops to Somalia. There are smaller activities in other locations of a similar nature.
The big deal is that a lot of the latent insurgencies, criminal organizations, and human traffickers are not really contained by borders, and are just fine spreading mayhem all over the place.
The Lord's Army (Joseph Kony), Al Shabaab, and Ansar al Islami to name a few. The human trafficking piece is particularly tragic in scope.

Did they give you an assignment location, or just a rundown of what comms they maintain?
If in Djibouti, you may go out to the safe houses for a time, but will primarily stay on Camp Lemonnier and travel as needed to sites. There are a handful of facilities that have full time support, and some of them are pretty rustic. Really cool mission, though. In many cases, you would live in the Embassy contracted housing, servicing or operating equipment used by forward deployed assets.
Get smart on satcoms, both transmit and data systems.

Similar to SF in the Phillipines. Deny possession of people's minds and property!

Fine Carlos, I'll play...Certainly would like to echo what 1SG Healy said (Hey 1SG, you replaced us, not sure if you remember me). Let's call the country of Djibouti a strategic location mainly due to exactly what 1SG Healy said, porous borders, a general lack of security by the host nation folks, and (about to assign some homework here) check out what country is across the Gulf of Aden/Red Sea. Here's a hint, it's Yemen which one could call a breeding ground or even training ground for people who hate America. I think we are also in the process of building a port there as well.
Also the President just probably about 2 years ago paid a LOT of money for the US to continue to rent/lease the land Camp Lemonnier is on. Like a 10 year contract with an option to renew for another 10 years at something like 20 million per year. Not sure how accurate that monetary amount is since I'm going off of what I recall without looking it up.
