Step 1: Go talk to a recruiter.
I was a prior service Marine that joined the Army after a 2 year break in service. Went to a recruiter and they did the rest.

The question didn't have enough characters. I have talked to a few recruiters. They are all saying I have to go reserves.

Sgt Darrin Momsen - That seems strange but I don't know how the Navy works so that may be the case. Good luck.

It would be a lot easier if you go reserve first and then active, I had 8 years break in service and Im on the reserve right now waiting for a billet to be open as a Master Arms!

I kept getting the run around. I have spoken to 3 different recruiters. Twice I have given them all of my information. The first one stopped responding to me. The second one went on leave when I was jobless, comes back from leave and I am working 52 hours per week (four 9s, and two 8s). I decided if he couldn't give me a heads up then I wasn't going to talk to him.
I asked an army recruiter about active duty, last week. He is already sending my information up for a rank determination. If they approve e-5 then I can go active if not then I can go reserves. I hinted it but didn't really explain that I wouldn't be interested in e-4.
