As Jr. Vice my Post Commander allowed me to do anything I want to try and get more younger members, 2 of us are just not enough, to that goal I have had Hunter-safety course will have more as well as Concealed carry class. May 16: I will have a Bicycle safety course with BBQ, June 15: Coal fest, July 18: 5K fun run /w refreshments, July 25: Waterpark with BBQ. All but carry class is paid for by the VFW and all members of the county are welcome. I don't know what im missing. PLZ let me know.

I think the biggest problem is that the VFW is viewed as an old folks club with a bunch of old geezers sitting around drinking beer and rehashing old war stories. I know this is not true, but a lot of the younger veterans have not had any real exposure to offset these preconceived notions. I am a Life Member of the VFW and joined in 2001 at age 30 as a charter member of a post in South Korea. I was Junior Vice Commander as well. We had no problems getting the younger soldiers involved. I think possibly trying to have an Open House at the post to get them in there to see what it really is all about will do wonders.

To tell you the truth ..as a member of the Geezer Battalion .. hanging around the lounge drinking cheap booze and re-hashing tales of the Mean Green Machine has it's high points at this point in my life. There are precious few veterans around in the first place.
When I was younger the idea of hanging around with a bunch of Korean and WW2 vets just didn't appeal to me and there was nothing else the VFW appeared to do.
So now I am a District Officer and starting to wonder how to get the younger vets involved but for the life of me I can't figure out what those things would be.
But I am open to any and all suggestions!

SPC Carl Krampitz, I like the idea of the Open House, I will bring it up next meeting and see if I cant get my Commander to sign off on it. Thank you very much.

I would try some family events to encourage the inclusion of family, just a thought because the reality is, time is a valuable commodity and most people choose to spend time on family.

All activities that I planed are for the whole family, you can even bring friends.
