I am interested in transferring from the National Guard to the Army Reserve. Can anyone tell me what the process is to accomplish this?

Yes you can. The easiest way is to request to go into the IRR. Then contact a local USAR Career Counselor to sign you too a unit. Call me with questions. I do it all the time.

Can it go the other way around - Reserve to Guard (California)? I haven't even completed a year with the reserve (it's a 6 year contract).

The start point is to get a condition release " DD Form 368 Conditional Release". The down side is that requires getting it signed off by the first General in your chain of command. If you get that, just see an Army Reserve recruiter.

One further comment. Don't take my remark to mean that it's impossible. Switching between Army Reserve and Army National Guard isn't uncommon and both services are generally cooperative since they both habitually deal with job and location changes for their soldiers.

The easiest way is talk to an Army reserve recruiter and they should be able to take care of the conditional release that is need to transfer. SGT (Join to see) both are reserves of the Army so why switch? Or are you switching for an MOS opportunity?

The National Guard can be called up for State emergencies, and you, during one of those, might not actually be working your MOS. Plus, finding a new unit when you get promoted is easier in the Army Reserve rather than the National Guard, partially because you can cross state lines without a metric crapload of paperwork.

That is true! I was going to mention the state mission but didn't and I should have, thanks! When my guard unit was deactivated I did a conditional release to transfer to the Navy. Six months later I did it again to transfer back to a new guard unit being created. The Navy Seabee unit I transferred to was boring, they had no equipment but a lot of classroom courses.

SGT (Join to see) As stated, your DD Form 368 and NGB-22 Form if I remember correctly are the two documents needed. Your Chain of Command will need to approve the DD Form 368 too. I have heard this takes time so expect to wait for a while. Best bet to call your USAR Recruiter to find out the exact procedures needed to be released from the National Guard component and then enlist in to the USAR component. He/she will be up on the regulations. I know a few USAR Recruiters I can ask on Tuesday if you need me to since I'm not a recruiter but work within a RCTG BN.

Why go from the National Guard to the Reserves? Both are part of the Reserve Component, though the Guard has it's additional State mission.

You would need the Army reserve recruiter to put in the paperwork to move into a separate service. You will probably be told to wait for your ETS because the paperwork is difficult with no guarantee that you will be approved.
