Once upon a time I was in the ad biz. I rose from copywriter to creative directory to agency partner, before I went on to another career. (But that's another story...) My least favorite task was designing a logo or logotype (a company name stylized and used as a logo). There are no rules. Either the client likes it or they don't. Don't bother asking why. Anything they respond with is a lie. They don't know. If you are the client, you'll be lying to yourself. The best advice I can offer is to establish a criteria before you look at the first design. What do you want people to "get" from the logo or logotype in 10 words or less? Then show the candidates to various people and ask them what they "get" from them? You'll still probably choose the one you like best regardless of what they say. Why do you like it? Don't even bother attempting to answer that question...

I drew out my idea on paper first, then worked with https://duckwebdesign.com/ to turn it into a clean digital version. They helped me tweak the colors and fonts until everything looked right for both a patch and online use. I liked that they kept things simple and quick, without overcomplicating the whole process. Having someone turn a rough sketch into something polished really made a difference.

How did you create or attain your business logo or morale patch?

There is a site called cooltext.com that you can easily make a logo, button, or title on. About 2000 fonts. Of course a pro will always (almost) do a better job than a free site, but it's a great rough draft.

That's cool. It reminds me of the MySpace customizations back in the day. Thanks.

SGT (Join to see) - I'm going through an instructional design masters and have to make a lot of mock ups in a short amount of time. I love the site.

I like illustrator and it works well for vectors. Also the trace function gets it pretty close for transfer from drawing to logo.
