My drills thought I was a CID plant because I was confident and asked questions. I had worked for Social Services prior to enlisting and got the lowest on a civil service test (94%) so couldn’t keep my job. My recruiter had been RIFT so would use his reserve rank of Major when he would call to see how I was doing. I would give him a pay phone number. Recruits don’t ask questions and I didn’t know that. I figured thing out, others followed me, the mess SGT loved to have me on KP because I had done catering and I didn’t get the nasty work. The Drills were just confused with me. I also put my Sr Drill on his butt after he put me on mine in hand-to hand. They kept asking me what my real rank was…I had no idea what they were talking about. I ran into a person I had know years before who was a drill for the men….from WNY to Ft Jackson, SC go figure.

I made it difficult on myself by not following orders. learned after 4 nights of KP. Made soldier of the month.promoted to E5, Tank Commander, 27 months in Germany,honorable discharge after 33 months because I extended my stay 3 months overseas.

My dad was Army and my step dad was a career Marine. I knew going in it could be hard. I didn't mind KP duty, I was the oldest daughter of 6 girls. Wasn't much different. I volunteered for everything. They got tired of it and wouldn't pick me for most things in basic and AIT. My regular unit was great.

My Father was in the 101st at the Battle of Bastogne in 1944. He was not much help. I talked to some friends that offered true advice.
