PTSD out of basic? Night terrors out of AIT? IG and EO complaints? Reports of "hazing" for being dropped for 20 push ups? How do we, as leaders, compensate for the decline of mental toughness in today's new recruits? How can we produce a quality product when we are expected to treat a new E1 with the same respect as an O10?

Fire for effect, send Snuffy and the rest of the malcontents out with the Walk of Shame backs turned to them as they are leaving, Rip the title of Soldier, Marine, Airmen, Sailor from them, cut any rank off of the old school way with a knife. This hand holding crap has gotten us what?

Start recruiting football players, quit recruiting guys with no options because they've never had to do any work.

There just aren't any farm boys left to recruit...

That is the gospel in my hometown area. 1,400 miles driven in a 40 square mile area on recruiters assistance. Number willing to talk, 2. Number eligible to talk, 0. Career ending there if you are a recruiter.

I wonder if the new Ready and Resilient program can curb some of that. I just don't understand. When I went to Basic Combat Training in 1998, I understood that I would be yelled at. I knew that the level of intensity was severely decreased from previous years. Drill Sergeants were no longer allowed to physically punch or kick recruits, etc. I heard they were not allowed to cuss at us, but they did and none of us said anything. I went to Basic and AIT as part of the National Guard's split option training program with a company of other like-minded 17y/o's. We all played the game, trained hard, and played hard.

It is a matter of adjusting our reaction. If we dont want pansies, don't give pansy behavior any merit. The more we give the more they will give up.

I was in BCT, unfortunately I didnt pass, but I still didnt think I was getting hazed or bullied. That's their job: To break you down and then build you back up then repeat until you form some resilience. That's why they say "suck it up and carry on"

You can't
We have to chose
You can be respectful to service-members without making them into and tolerate them being weak mentally and physically
