A leader is someone who can convince others to do what they otherwise would not.

A leader can get the most out of each team member, and get them to strive towards the same goals.

A leader can find a way to motivate others to reach their potential.

A leader sets goals that are obtainable and further the organization's objectives.

A leader is fair and objective when administering correction and praise.

A leader puts others' needs ahead of their own.

A dedicated team player who takes initiative and assumes responsibility for his actions and the actions of his team. Setting the standards by doing and allowing others the chance to lead and if they fail, making sure they are picked up, brushed off and taught to carry on. Some of my best and hardest lessons came as a failed attempt, learn from it and grow, don't let it tear you down.

Boss versus leader
A manager will push (power) you to get results. A leader will pull (influence) you to achieve those same results. A manager has subordinates whereas a leader has followers. A true leader will use their position to empower others.

True 1SG Michael Blount Some people can't handle the responsibility and at other times it's time to be a good follower.

MAJ (Join to see) - having been burned in the past, I put people on a short leash until they earn a longer one.

1SG Michael Blount I'm sure they know they're in a shit storm when Top's mad. Our medics sure did. They knew he had a soft side for the platoon, but it just made the rain fall down harder when it was time to pay the piper.

MAJ (Join to see) - yah, my Privates know when I'm mad. So do my Drills. I just remember with the Drills to praise in public, criticize in private. That doesn't apply to Privates. They haven't earned that right. For the most part, they get the short leash from Zero Day until Graduation.

In addition to all of the traits and characteristics that others have mentioned, a true leader develops other leaders. A true leader molds followers into leaders in their own right.

My leader is/should be my mirror. My influence and inspiration in the stewardship of the Army values. The main architect of the Esprit de Corps in the unit.

All great responses, but do not forget to mentor your junior SMs. Seems in the 'new Army', where cut backs are going on, leadership tends to focus on themselves and less on their junior Soldiers. Not everyone can be a leader, regardless of that individuals rank. Toxic leadership will always be worse than no leadership.

A leader is someone who sets the example and takes care of his/her Soldiers. A leader takes responsibility for his actions and the actions of the troops. A leader does not try to hide when things are tough, but hit it head on. A leader is not scared to do what is right. Lastly, a leader was a great follower before becoming a leader.
