How do you feel when someone thanks you for your service?

This is something that I struggle with personally. I appreciate the words but don't seek them out. I would honestly rather it not be said but shown by a populace that demands better medical care for veterans, increased pay and retirement benefits. When I was on active duty in the 80's & 90's nobody "thanked" you for your service but now it's PC which makes it more uncomfortable to me. Thoughts?

Does it ever feel uncomfortable for you when people thank you for your service?
I do understand that all they are doing is trying to show their appreciation. But, I have developed anxiety issues due to my service. I find it very uncomfortable when strangers approach me, even to thank me for my service. Usually it is when I am out with my family. Sometimes they will get between me and my child or approach me while I am eating or interrupt me while I am in the middle of something. Am i the only one that feels this way?

Ma'am,
I think this is a very good question, and one with which many service members struggle. If it helps, here are some comments from other RP members with their thoughts about it:

What's the best response for "thank you for your service"? I like to say this... | RallyPoint
So for a long time I did not know what to say when someone said this to me. But finally I have the best thing to say that makes complete sense... With a smile I say, "Thank YOU for paying your taxes" Its comical and they always laugh, but also very true at the same time. I am a people person and this has opened so many door of opportunity for me. Feel free to use it and post your comments on what you normally say.
