I'm in the market for a new car and wanted to know your best tips and tricks to make sure you get the best deal.

What strategies do you use when you get to dealership? What do you do when talking to the salesperson? What should I be on the look out for?

We compared USAA with the Costco service and found Costco the best deal for our Ram Ecodiesel. Turned out the dealership was a Costco distributer. We subsequently got caught up in VW Dieselgate on our Sportwagen. We wanted an AWD and found a 16 Forester with 10,000 miles on it for $9 Grand less than the best Costco deal for a new one, so my wife drove away happy. Bottom line, do your homework and keep an eye out. Same advice you'd get since the '50s.

I let my daughter or USAA do the negotiating for me. I'm not very good at it.

CPT Jack Durish My sons were taught to haggle early on.

They still recount the door to door salesman that was going to give me a road atlas for listening to his pitch, he was quite surprised when I forcefully demanded his atlas before letting him depart!

SSG Carlos Madden - For the best deal don't buy a new car. Consider buying a used car, a just off lease car, or a "new in stock" prior year model - with extended power train and major repairs warranty. This will get you a far better deal than buying a new car that loses half its value when first driven off the lot by a new car buyer. Consider what the trade in value will be after one, two, or more years. Consider driving the car into the ground - not just buying another new one because you feel or believe you must need one. Get some counseling to discuss why you need a new car. I have always bought used weapons, used cars, used aircraft, and used homes well below market. I can be a tough negotiator when it comes to my money.

All that said - I am a fool for new shoes, new clothes, new accessories, and new jewelry - to the point many of my colleagues suspect that I may be just a bit secretly addicted to shopping - particularly for "vintage" fashions - classic hats and pencil skirts. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

Vendors and sellers would be well advised to avoid negotiating with you unless they like self-punishment. And how about those vintage WWII ladies outfits from QE's time? Never had any luck coming up with a source.

Capt Tom Brown - The Protocol Officer at the British Embassy fixed me up - on pain of secrecy about sourcing of the genuine uniform, hat, shoes, gloves, bag, etc. But, the hat pin remains a mystery - not even the movie costumer knew the origin or where to get one. Instead, we used a hat pin that was appropriate for military staff who were associated with The Royal Family. She also had my hair, nails, and makeup done according to fashions of the time. The entire effect was according to the Ambassador - stunning - if not somewhat unnerving. One of the MI6 spooks with rather dry sense of humor asked whether I might be out and about "igcognito" - having greatly enjoyed the film. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)
