How do you handle a disrespectful junior soldier that doesn't belong to you?

I recently encountered a junior soldier who wore a patch I didn't recognize who was walking around outside in a VERY ate-up uniform. I showed him my ID card and identified myself and explained to him where he was wrong and asked him to correct the deficiencies. At which point, the soldier told me to go f*** myself and then tried to fight me. Now, the grunt in me got really excited and couldn't wait to wall-to-wall this young soldier, but the professional in me simply wouldn't allow it. So I asked what unit the soldier belonged to, to which he responded "To your f***ing mama, b****." Now RP Leaders, how would you suggest I go about rectifying this situation, or should I simply leave it be and let the Karma catch up with him?
**ADMIN NOTE** I still have not been able to find the patch and it's corresponding unit, so I have no way of finding this soldier's Command.

As much as it irks me to say so, let it go, taking the time to hunt him down is probably just a waste. Most of us don't want to have "that guy" in our military, but his time in is limited anyway. Either it will catch up with him, or he'll ETS. Now the fact he tried to fight you, I would probably have contacted the authorities and had them deal with it, suppressing the urge to throttle the little brat.

He's probably some asshat Jody that likes to play soldier.
Just let it go or rip off his tabs and see him report it to the cops. When they arrive he can stutter about his violation of stolen valor.

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that you went up to soldier and bitched at him about his uniform and had zero tact about it. Did you ask him if he was just getting off work? Or did you go straight in calling him a dirtbag? I had this happen to me before after 14 hours of turning wrenches on a jet in the hot sun covered in hydraulic fluid and anyone who knows about hydraulic fluid knows how bad you smell. So there I was getting gas and a burrito on my way home and had a stuck up desk jockey bitch at my uniform. No questions just straight in calling me a dirtbag, to which I told them to go fuck themselves and where I worked. Said individual went to my supervisor and flight chief to which they told that individual to go fuck themselves. Next was to the first sergeant who go the commander involved. It was starting to get serious when I got called in. So then I got to stand at attention while my commander and first sergeant ripped the desk jockey up down left and right about what the actual mission of the Air Force. That there are some that actually earn their paycheck everyday with blood sweat and tears and that the real Air Force isn’t a recruiting commercial. The commander looked at me and said what do you have to say for yourself, I told him as much as I want to disrespect this man I won’t disrespect the rank again sir. My commander nodded and told me to leave.

Actually no. This is how the encounter went down --to the letter.
I pulled up to the gas station (about a mile outside of post) in civilian clothes. I noticed PV2 Smith walking outside with his boots unbloused, top open and without headgear. I stepped out of my car and called out to him.
"Private Smith, can you come here for a second?" He walked over and said "wassup."
I pulled out my CAC card and said "how ya doin tonight? My name is Specialist Pietrantonio. I work at the reception battalion on Fort Jackson." He said "okay, whats up man?" I said "I know it's about 8 o'clock, but you know if you're in uniform, you need to be within regs. And right now, you're very far from the mark. So I need you to fix your blouse, blouse up your boots and put something on your head if you're gonna be out here. Or change into civvies. I dont really care which, but you can't be out here all jacked up. There's a lot of Drills [Drill Sergeants] that live out here that would have a field day of they saw this."
He replied with "nah fuck that, if you was a NCO [I didn't say I was, by the way] you'd know you can't have earrings [again, not true, per AR 670-]. So fuck outta here with your bullshit."
Then I lost my patience and said "okay guy, what unit do you belong to?" To which was replied "yo mama bitch, not fuck off outta here before I steal off on yo ass [sucker punch me in the face]." At this point this Private squared his shoulders and started flexing his arms like he was going to take a swing. I invited him to try it so he could get his ass whooped in front of God and everybody, at which point he got in his car and drove off.
So by all means, please tell me how I was wrong in the way I approached this soldier, or how I responded to his fuckery the wrong way?
All due respect, SSgt, but you neither know me well enough to make such an assumption, nor the situation well enough for your comment to be productive. I asked for input on how I handled the situation, not on a nonsensical assumption of who or how I am as a leader without basis in fact, experience or reality.

And in addendum to that, regardless of what long day he may or may not have had, regulations are there for a reason, ANF should be enforced at every level at all times. I didn't sign the dotted line for some wanna be thug Private to make me or my organization look stupid and complacent.

SP4, had 3 PFCs and another SP4 on a detail. one PFC who had just arrived started giving me the 'your not a NCO, you cant tell me what to do. other 3 guys where telling him I could. mu problem was solved when dirtbag PFC was still mouthing off as Top came around the corner. he ended up finishing the detail under Tops supervision and there wad instruction abouy the rank structures in our unit.

My guess is he wasn't in the military. He was probably visiting someone or maybe a military dependent. No junior soldier would act that way knowing that he could face charges under the UCMJ.

Disrespect me and I got the stripes? Your gonna be a lot stronger when I get done with you! Plus I guarantee the Earth will be about 5 feet closer to the sun! Not gonna play that game. You refuse to get your face on the ground I'll help you! A officer or an NCO is a powerful thing that has a lot of responsibility that goes with it. If a troop will challenge your authority on base they'll do it in combat! People then die! Nip that crap in the ass immediately!

I've been retired for more years than I was in the service, but I'm not sure how one could track down PVT Snuffy from a unit patch. I've never seen a unit patch below brigade level.
