I'm not talking about a dead round here. I'm talking about fellow troops who don't put out. They however are doing a great job LOOKING busy. Sometimes they even brag about how good of a job they did in the previous commands looking busy. They're also great 'social butterflies' and everyone seems to 'love' them, especially from different shops.

I have one like that. Though I had a word with him, I'm not over him and cannot discipline him like he should be. I have mentioned him to my LPO (NCOIC) who has done practically nothing either, and I'm really getting fed up with it. I don't want to stir things up quite yet and trying my best to keep it diplomatic. Help me out here, someone!

We just yell at him, I don't know if you can do that though . . . lead by example?

Thought about it. Trying not to escalate too fast, but if push comes to shove, you bet I will. Oohrah

I don't know how mentoring works in the Navy, but have you reviewed/discussed his performance with him (what does he think of his performance / what do you think)? Have you given him specific goals (specific areas to improve / classes to attend / etc.)? Did you follow up at a later date and discuss how he has met/has failed to meet those goals?

If you do this on paper that he signs afterward you will have a history and something to stand on when you approach your LPO. And, conversely, if he does well you'll have quantifiable proof of achievement if you want him recognized (board, award, sailor of the quarter or whatever the Navy has)

Yeah, I'm considering talking with my LPO about it. Funny how some people are so good in 'winning others over' by their character traits, and how well they use that to cover their performance shortcomings. I see through it however and just waiting for the right opportunity to put him on spotlight. One thing in the Navy that works is confronting someone when they realize they messed up. I tried 'yelling' in the past, but it rarely worked. BTW: are you from Russia?

Yes. Here are the answers to FAQ following that one.
Born in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, still in the Soviet Union at the time.
It is on the Kamchatka peninsula between Alaska and Japan (follow the islands).
Moved to the US in 2002. Los Alamos, NM. My parents are Scientists.
Became a naturalized (US) citizen in 2008.
I have a clearance. It did not require any extra paperwork (not that I remember).

You officially know more about me, PO1 (Join to see), than any girl after first date with me ever (probably)

PO1 (Join to see)...I skipped over this post the first time. And then my curiosity got the best of me. "So, really, how DO you handle a dud? What if it...just doesn't go OFF? Call EOD?!" I was feeling the panic as I couldn't remember what to do. And then...I realized what you were asking. And realized that learning to disable a non-functional IED is still a simpler than the answer to your question. Thanks, though.

Hate to pick on Hooahs, but a Marine SGT that I used to work with a while back used to pick on Hooah. He asked me one day if I knew the origin of it.

I gave him some BS answer, and he said that it started when the Marines were founded in 1775 at Tun Tavern. Some sailors came into tavern looking for a few good men to fight alongside with them. Those who volunteered were accepted as Marines.

The others who hesitated said, "Who, us?" Thus the saying Hooah is the short form of who, us? So Hooah to you!

Well, in all fairness: We don't say "Hoooooah." It's more like a grunt, "Hup". But I honestly think "OOORAH!" is the most cool. I mean, compare the two, lol...in your deepest military voice. OOORAH!
Well, I'm not a Marine, but damn if I'm still not a dork. Oh well. *sighs*

Actually, PO1 (Join to see), SGT (Join to see), Hoooah is spelled HUA and stands for Heard Understood Acknowledged. Look it up.

"What you are going to do, is rappel off this wall HUA?" "HUA!!!"

I can agree. But I've also heard it in regards to Officers and their posteriors. Meh...who knows?
