I don't understand how gastric bypass would be elective if it was to provide a life-saving benefit. Are they saying that there are other ways to not-be-fat, so those are the first options (diet, exercise, etc)?

I found it, please understand, I only give it here for info, I have zero clue if it's available for whom you're trying to help. I also don't know if it'd be suited, or appropriate, it's a very serious professional clinical device, as I'd said, only to be used under expert care, and after careful clinical eval, as well, hope is of use as well, be eager for any thoughts, many thanks.

I don't want to speak beyond my level here, however, I'll try to suggest what I can. You'd need to elaborate far more, so far possible, however, I can most definitely assure you that gastric bypass is not, despite appearances to the contrary, a cosmetic procedure, by any means, that is, while perhaps understandable, entirely the wrong viewpoint. It's actually a very, very serious bariatric surgical procedure, with numerous potential complications, all of which can be extremely complex. First. Before you suggest anything, the principal thing I'd suggest is a full bariatric eval, by proper gastrointestinal (GI) physicians. I was not medicine, I was only doctoral level allied health, though my wife and I had me shut my license sevl yrs ago. However, we had a family !e!her get a full bypass, and I can assure you the results are frequently far from benign, by any means I entirely understand the gravity of your question, and, I think, your reasons for asking it and phrasing it as you have. I don't kmow how the services or VA view bariatric procedures, however, I'm quite sure you could ask, wherever you are. Believe me, we also comsidered it for me, or variations on that same theme. We used, for me, a device called the Portion Controller, am external, wearable lap name, that positively required professional clinical adjustment to use right, that got me down from 342 lbs. to about 270 lbs., more or less. I know it was FDA approved, it was based on research in the UK, the internist Jere who designed it passed away, I'm not sure of its still available, I kmow there was effort to still provide it clinically, and, to a very reap extent, it did do what we sought for !e, as my weight was causing and/or exacerbating very real cardiac problems for me. I'll try to find a link for it, however please believe me when I tell you that what youre referring to is a bariatric procedire, the most serious type, there are segeral other alternatives, I assure you, if you'd care to chat further, I'll try, however, please understand that, due to our circuit!stances for me, there's obviously a fundamental limit to what I can say, as I was never a physician, though I was exposed to a good deal before I became ill, that's all I'm trying to say. Hope that was at least of somemise, if I can find that link, I'll try to send it, of course, as well, many thanks.
