How does everyone feel about the new Changes to the Navy dress uniforms?

I actually think that putting a zipper but keeping the look of the 13-button closure seems silly. Before I joined the Navy, I worked in men's fashion, and I have always been of the mind that form follows function with clothing. If the buttons are just going to be for looks, get rid of them entirely.
As for the new whites with the piping on the cuffs and the tar flap, I like them a lot. The current white jumper is pretty much the old "undress white" jumper, and has always looked less dressy than a dress uniform really ought to,

Each of the 13 buttons stands for the original colonies in America. It seems that no one cares about our history any more. Always wear the uniform with pride.

Chief, I don't understand what you mean when you say that no one understands tradition or cares about our history...as a point of fact, the 13 buttons are unrelated to the 13 colonies; the trousers had 15 buttons in the early 1800s and for a significant portion of the 19th century only had 7 buttons. In 1894 when the broadfall trousers were enlarged, "13" buttons (it's actually 14), and even then it was only to make them symmetrical. This info is from the Navy History and Heritage Command.

Well, there are a lot of traditions in the Navy that is not written down on paper. Having said that I still believe that the 13 buttons stand for the original colonies, just as the flap on the back of the Navy uniform was to keep tar off of their backs. We were taught in boot cam how to survive in the water with just dungarees. Oh I forgot that is no longer part of the sea bag.
