Im a prior service Marine who just transferred into the Army Reserve and I just wanted to figure out if there was a way to work in the Reserves as active duty instead of doing that weekend a month thing.

Yes, everything that you’ve been told in this thread is accurate; I’m just chiming in because I was in the same situation. I was prior service Marine Corps, got out, went back to school, then found out about the Army National Guard. I drilled for a few years, then I found out about Recruiting and Retention Bn. I put in a packet and the rest is history. I was AGR until my health began failing and I was medically retired. It’s a very rewarding career and a great way to get 20 years under your belt.

So does that mean that Active Reserve counts as active duty time towards your retirement?

One caveat: AGR in the Army Reserve is like active duty; you PCS every few years all over the country, even some OCONUS posts are a possibility. AGR in the Army National Guard, you are at least limited to your state.

How does one go into active reserve or guard orders?

SSG Miller nailed it for you, I would talk to your COC if their is an open slot in your unit for AGR that you are MOS qualified for some times they can do a by name request once your packet is turned in.

So it has to be with the current unit you are assigned to or can it be the unit that you pick that has an open slot?

You can apply and if selected from the general pool they will offer you 3 places that you are MOS qualified for, I was offered back in 2007 but they offered me,, NY, NJ and Iowa and I had just come back from a 1 1/2 deployment and did not want to leave or move. But if you have a good relationship with the COC and they have an opening I have seen that unit do a request by name, just depends on what you want to do.

Yes. It is called Active Guard or Reserve (AGR). Find a position and fill out a packet.

There may be an opportunity to get your clearance once you get the position too.

SSG Phil Miller - From what I know of friends who recently been selected AGR they said you must now have a clearance before you can even put your packet in.

I've heard varying things about the whole Guard/Reserve tech thing...I gather it's some kind of "double-dipping" thing, or so I've heard, where one wears the uniform during the week, even though one is paid, and ultimately retires, as a civil servant, either state for Guard Tech, or Federal or State Tech, as well as getting Guard/Reserve retirement...I'm total perm disabled now, though I did look at it quite seriously, I hadn't known about it till after I'd gotten off active, I'd seen you'd listed AGR where you'd sent this thread, as one of the rooms you'd sent it to, I just wasn't sure if you'd known about Guard/Reserve Tech, I figured you might, I just wasn't certain, obviously, hope is of at least some use, possibly....

Oh...got it...I'd known some stuff about it, I realized I didn't know all of it, much appreciated...I'd really been interested in it at one point, as I'd said, albeit yrs ago, of course...

That's quite interesting, I hadn't heard that...as I'd said, I knew the programs existed, though not all the nitty-gritty, obviously, of course....

OK...yeah, I'd kinda expect that, being as they're doubling between Guard/Reserve and civil service, that's another interesting aspect I hadn't considered, the whole union thing, as you described it......that's certainly rather unique in a military context, obviously....
