If I become a warrant officer as long as I don't outrank my chief I know I can stay as a technician but if I go lieutenant I outrank him can I lose my job as a technician?

I don't think that matters in the reserves, not sure about the guard. I was a SSG but one of the miltechs in an underlying unit was actually an LTC when I was in.

Rank inversion pertains to rating schemes. If you outrank your civilian boss on the military side, a rank inversion situation exists. Normally, there will be a command policy on this.
In my command, the civilian boss reverts to a letter of input with the next level supervisor rating both to eliminate perceptions of favorable treatment (or retaliation).

Yes if u can't find a position somewhere else you will lose your job. Now maybe they can have u report to someone else. In my 13 years experience as a tech you lose your job.

How does rank inversion work for army guard mil techs?

What makes you think that you would lose your job.
One of the jobs is military and the other is civilian. During the week you may be the man and on the weekend drills you become subordinate to A officer.
If you become a officer in the guard then you are the man for both jobs
Until then remember what hat you are wearing and you will be good

In the NCArNG, used to be and may still be, Techs had enlisted jobs and O jobs. Training Tech was the lowest O job. So if you were an LT and an AST (enlisted job)you would no longer have a job. USR had no tech job requirements.

Maybe you should rephrase your question.

I'm not sure how it all works with guard and reserve. In active duty it all depends on what your unit's MTOE is. If your only has one slot for a particular WO MOS and you decide to become one, you'd get PCS'd to a unit that needs you instead of staying where you are at and being excess.

You can be sure that if you become a commissioned officer, you will eventually stop concentrating on your current job. A commissioned officer is required to have a very diverse skill set and most of those skills do not concentrate on a single MOS, but a broader understanding of military operations.

I actually just applied to a job that the supervisor of the section is a MSG. What they did for the position was made the rating supervisor over the position I applied to a LTC. That way there wasn't a rank inversion scenario. It all depends on the leadership. Sometimes they are willing to do that, other times they aren't.

In the National Guard, a number of soldiers are what as referred to as full time technicians. They work for a shop that supports units as their full time job. They are normally full time employees as Wage Grade Technicians, wage grade supervisors, a few maybe GS employees. NG techs, wear their uniforms, I believe, and I am sure my Army reserve folks will correct me, don't wear their uniforms. So if you are an E-6 and would like to become a Warrant Officer, and the Shop Chief holds the rank of E-9. You can no longer work for that shop, and or may have to give up your technician position. Now if the Shop Chief is a CW-2, you go to WOCS and come back as a W-1, that's okay, as the Shop Chief is still senior to you, but if you go to OCS and come back as a O-1 you are now senior in grade to the Shop Foreman/Shop Chief. That is where the rank inversion comes from. In the Fed Tech program you can't have your weekend Boss work for you during the month. I know this sounds confusing, and it took me a while to grasp it myself when I transitioned from AD to NG many years ago. This is a very simple explanation, I am sure it gets more complicated than what I have described here.
