How does your Commander's performance on their PT test influence your opinion of them?

Do you think more or less of a commander if they get the maximum score possible on their APFT (or whatever test your respective service takes)? During my enlisted days I don't think I ever had a commander who was a PT stud. If I had a commander who couldn't pass a PT test I might honestly think less of them, but I don't know if they really need to blow it out of the water. Thoughts?

It does matter to me, if the Commander fails becuase he or she hasnt been keeping up with military standards. It, could be because of lack of discipline. The Commander is the Commander, we can ignore it. Overall if they fail, you have it in the back of your head that in someway, the unit has performance issues. Regardless, if the Army wants you to turn a cheek or not.

You lead from the front. It's probably difficult to do that if your falling out of a light run. I don't respect leaders as much if they can't get a first class PFT and CFT.

It doesn't, PT test waste of damn time for everyone concerned. Daily PT is what is needed.

So long as they can pass a PT test that part is of low importance compared to leadership abilities. You don't quit your job you quite your boss and after what I saw in two different units I quit my boss due to stupidity and arrogance which made a bad combination in Iraq with one and the "we don't care because your not going with us" immediately when I got home with the other. And I very much loved that job.

Command teams must set the standard. If you want a 250 standard, get a 250. My company pt average is 272. My commander and 1sg exceed that score.

I honestly never knew my CO’s score, but passing is a must. How can you expect your joes to pass if you yourself cant pass. The CO must pass, but in my opinion if i were in those shoes. I would strive to have the highest score possible even if it killed me.

Yes, Commanders should set the standard, max the test......simple as that. Lead by example, we’re not talking about Olympic Qualifying standards here, no world qualifying standards, just warfighter physical fitness. Created for Soldiers by Soldiers. As a former Enlisted Soldier, a Chief Warrant Officer and finally a direct commission to Commissioned Officer, below zone selection to field grade and later selected for Battalion coomand with the 18th Airborne Corps, and 31 years active duty, “A” right, I believe Commanders should max the PT test. It’s certainly not the only measure of effectiveness, but it definitely sets the tone, it sets expectations. An ARI study I read during my days as a CW3 concluded there are many testable measures to predict military success, IQ, education, etc., etc., however, none had a 1-1 correlation with military success. However, physical fitness measurables ( PT test scores) had the highest correlation for military success. It demonstrates pride, commitment, hard work. “Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn’t have to do it”..........that is the hand written sign as the XO I had to pull down on more than one occasion because our then commander had such miserable PT test scores. Particularly in the run, so poorly he never took the PT test with the unit. Sorry, if you’re going to be a leader of soldiers in the best Army in the world.......back that chair away from the dinner table, get off the couch and get to the gym.....again we’re NOT talking Olympic PT standards........” I never heard of a man drown in his own sweat”!
