Do you think more or less of a commander if they get the maximum score possible on their APFT (or whatever test your respective service takes)? During my enlisted days I don't think I ever had a commander who was a PT stud. If I had a commander who couldn't pass a PT test I might honestly think less of them, but I don't know if they really need to blow it out of the water. Thoughts?

Flip the narrative on its head for a minute. Ever met the guy that was dumb as dogs-it, but he got a 300 apft, so he could do no wrong. Physicality is important, the apft isn’t the whole picture, but it is the metric that the army prays to.

Maxing a pt test just meant you were in good physical shape, didnt reflect on your abilities as a Cdr, in my eyes. Although being a pt buff often made some overlook that you were a soup sandwich as a soldier.

A large number of my officers and warrants were Viet Nam veterans who had already proven themselves , they had nothing to prove to me in any arena.

Every CO I have had holds a company standard of a 270 on the APFT. Every CO I have had does not score over a 270 on the APFT. I don’t think less of them because they don’t score well on the APFT, I think less of them cause they can not hold their own standard.

Wouldn't care if they didn't get a high score, but any leadership billet/rank that couldn't PASS a PFT, would automatically make me think less than them as a leader. Commanders especially, since they are usually the ones who will NJP/push for discharge at the first sign of weigh-in/PFT failure.

I feel like some might feel it depends on the type of commander. If your CO is one minute threating someones future because they aren’t motivated or they aren’t scoring high enough, then the same CO goes and hits that 181 or just “pencil whips” his or her test then yea I’m will to bet the troops are gonna at you like a turd simple. Soldiers don’t want to see perfection, they wanna see leaders sucking along side them. It’s not a hard concept on some fronts, your soldiers have to destroy themselves every six months, why can’t the CO do it too?

As long as they passed I was good. I not into u have to be a pt stud. I have seen to many pt studs at every level that couldn't lead ants to a picnic if they where already on the blanket

I never had a PL, Company Commander, or Battalion Commander counterpart who didn't max the APFT. Any leader who cannot lead by example should be tossed.

I don't believe for a minute that EVERY ONE in your command structure Maxed out had a perfect scores on there PT tests without some pencil whipping going on.
