How does your Commander's performance on their PT test influence your opinion of them?

Do you think more or less of a commander if they get the maximum score possible on their APFT (or whatever test your respective service takes)? During my enlisted days I don't think I ever had a commander who was a PT stud. If I had a commander who couldn't pass a PT test I might honestly think less of them, but I don't know if they really need to blow it out of the water. Thoughts?

I have not met a lot of my commanders but PT isn't everything so I do not think less of anyone who can or can't max their PT test. I'm only 18 and I am definitely not a PT stud my run and sit ups could be better.

I would probably have chuckled if they failed and would probably have lost a little respect for them if only because they are tasked with keeping and enforcing the standards. Failure would be to fall short of the standards they are tasked with keeping and enforcing. A commanding officer is expected to lead by example.
The paradox however is that if they blew it out of the water I might gain a little more respect for them on a *physical* level, but it wouldn't mean a thing in terms of respect for them as a leader. I judge my commander based on their command presence, planning ability, if they are supportive of their troops, and if there is a willingness to share hardship. A Gung-ho Butter Bar with a degree in Basket Weaving may blow the PT out of the water but most are still generally walking Fuster Clucks with just about everything else. At least until that Gold gives way to Silver. The fact that 2Lt. Gung-Ho Butter Bar can ace PT doesn't make him competent.

I think that every Commander should set the standard and that is at least trying to max the PT Test. In the world of the Infantry you should always be fit and that needs to be shown throughout your unit. Every Commander that I have had was a stud and maxed it.

As long as they pass, it’s fine. When it comes to commanders, I’m more concerned with how they run their unit.

Commanders passing their APFT is something many soldiers in the unit think is important. Soldiers will not have confidence nor respect for their commander if they can not meet the army’s most basic requirements. Vice versa commanders and key leaders who exceed standards on their APFT in my experience have gained a ton of respect for the unit and the soldiers under them. Soldiers like to see leaders performing to the same if not better standards that they are pressured to meet.

It depends on the circumstances of the commander and there respected mission set. What I do have to say is that every soldier should be able to pass the standard APFT and basic BRM after all in the end we were all soldiers! Airborne ATW!!

Can he carry his combat load into the battle and back? That is the only physical fitness test that really matters
