Every November, military posts and bases recognize National Native American Heritage Month.
As one with Native American blood and culture in my family tree (Chippewa and Cherokee), I believe it is fitting and honorable that we recognize the contributions of a people who had every right to refuse to support our Armed Forces, but chose to support us, join us, and in many cases, lead the way.
How does your post recognize Native American heritage this month? Will you be participating? If you are no longer in uniform, how did your post or unit recognize Native American Heritage month?

A Brief History of American Indian Military Service
Ask about Americans Indians serving in the U.S. military service and World War II generally comes to mind with the Navajo code talkers or perhaps Marine Cpl. Ira Hayes (Pima) in the photo of the U.S. flag raising at Iwo Jima. But the history of Native Americans in military services stretches in the past and the present much farther and deeper.

You would think the home of the Carlisle Indian School would do something, but I honestly haven't noticed anything. I'll have to keep an eye out for any events over the next two weeks.

Of course right after I post this, I receive the following mass email:
"Please join the Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) in recognizing Native American Heritage Month. It will be a one hour traditional Dance Demonstration presented by the Native Pride Dancers; filled with educational, fun and interaction. "
