How hard is it to get the status of a discharge changed?

I know a guy who was chaptered out for PT failure. That was 2 years ago. He just recently found out that he's had a significant heart condition that went undiagnosed for many years. Is it possible for him to get his discharge changed to medical and is there any benefit to doing so?

He would have to apply to the Army Board of Corrections of military records. His discharge would be changed, and it's possible he would be medically separated under Meb.

This is, according to the Dr, a genetic/congenital condition. It was not detected when he went through MEPS. It is significant enough that he would have been disqualified for service had it been detected. It is also, in all likelihood, the major reason in his poor PT performance, ie he had no problem with PU and SU, he just had trouble with the run. He is 27 and had a major heart attack which led to the discovery of this condition.

they're not sure yet. still doing diagnostic tests. His arteries were 90% blocked but it wasn't cholesterol or the usual stuff. It was some kind of fibrous tissue build up which has them thinking it is some kind of genetic/congenital issue. Also muscular dystrophy runs in the family. His aunt is a carrier and one of his cousins has it, so it is possible that could be the issue. The form of MD they have is a milder form and many people with it don't show symptoms until they are older.

That depends on if the condition can be proven it was service connected since he’s already separated from the Military.

I guess the issue is, if it is genetic then it is something the military missed. He should have been disqualified from service, but since they missed it and let him in, the stress of daily PT could have made his condition worse. That, IMHO, would make his current condition service connected. I guess bottom line is: he was chaptered out for PT failure and the Army never bothered to try to find out why he was having issues with the run, they just assumed he was lazy.

Just doesn't seem right that he got kicked out for PT failure when it was a medical condition that the Army missed that was causing his problem with passing APFT.
