What type of unit would I most likely get assigned to? What is their mission (what is it like day-to-day) I know it’s a nice post and know what is in the area. Having trouble finding info about units and their day to day activities.

Welcome to the area. I grew up here in Colorado Springs, Co. and had my final tour of duty to retire here out of Fort Carson. After military duty, we're not a big city, but have plenty of things you can enjoy. Cost of living is up and climbing, especially off post living, so if you have to consider living off post, get to know the market and weigh your options with post living options. You'll do well, as others have mentioned, our units you may land in are some of the best. I'm Civil Service at Carson in support of you, your Family and if you need support, I am near the DEERS or ID card facility. Welcome! :)

My first duty was as a Private E-1, 12b 4th Engr Bn at 4th ID and it was great duty (in the 70s). We spent a lot of time in the field with Infantry, Cav. and Tankers, they needed us, we needed them, good rivalry and friendships. We trained downrange at Ft Carson but also in the mountains at Camp Hale and Desert at Ft. Irwin. They do deploy often from what I see and read but they are a trained unit when they go. CO Springs has grown too big but you can still get away to loads of fun places in an hour or two. Go for it.

How is Fort Carson for a first duty station as a 12B?

As a new soldier at your first duty station, they are all alike. You will be doing mind numbingly boring tasks, followed by long periods of hurry up and wait. On a daily basis, you will ask yourself, “Why the hell did I join the army?” The soldiers leading you will seem like dolts, idiots and fools. The thought, “ If they would only listen to me....” will enter your mind 100 times a day. In the words of the late, great Hunter S. Thompson, “Buy the ticket, enjoy the ride.”

Go to Global Security.org. Search for Units on Fort Carson and 4th ID. After that go to any hardware store and pick yourself up a big, heavy broom and purchase it. Then go to a Walmart parking lot and start sweeping. That will get you ready for daily operations.

Did my Basic and my A.I.T. way back in Oct 61 and thought it was a good duty post at the time. Colorado Springs is not to far, a lot to see. Have a good time..

Not sure if you’re here yet and may already know this piece of information, be very wary of traffic going to and from post. You’ll need to leave earlier than usual ( that is if you’ll live off-post) to avoid/decrease the gate traffic time.
