How long does it take for the navy to send an active secret clearance to the coast guard? I have my A school date of 28 November, but awaiting my clearance to be transferred to the Coast guard.

@SN Greg Wright: It's 'puddle Pirates' not puddle jumpers. A 'puddle jumper' is a small plane. FYI.

It all depends how they send it and what the instruction states. The coast guard should have the same system to be able to look up your clearance. You have to remember your clearance is PII so there's protocols that have to be followed. Good luck and hopefully that gave you some insight.

It was many moons ago, but when I was in it took about a week to get full clearance. Command may have expedited it, as I was replacing an ET-1 who had been busted twice for incompetence, and transferred off. As LPO for Electronics I had to have access to CIC, Radio, Crypto and IFF, and I had to have it like yesterday since much of the equipment was casrepped.

It may have changed, but when I looked into some issues with clearances a few years ago the USCG wasn't actually using JPAS they maintained their own clearance center. They do have access to JPAS though and it should be relatively easy to make the move, assuming that on the release from service (to facilitate the transfer) they didn't relinquish the clearance for some reason. Good luck!

Just to be clear, OPM-FIS or the Office of Personnel Managment Federal Investigative Service performs the security clearance background checks for the Coast Guard and 90% of the Government including 100 other Federal agencies. The DOD and/or DHS do not perform background checks for the CG. If you goto Opm.gov you can find all of your own answers to your security clearance related questions.

Assuming JPAS use it could take just a few minutes but local commands usually have some internal processes. Even if a visit request isn't sent in advance some one who has their information maintained in JPAS can be verified when they arrive, again depending on local policies.

There is no real time associated with this process. In fact the CG should have direct access to verify your clearance. I would ask your CG POC to clarify. What it may be is that the CG is validating and determining reciprocity or not. The transfer of the clearance is what takes the time.

Since both fall under the DoD, and it is the DoD that gave you your clearance, there should be no "transfer". The school you are attending should be able to look in JPAS and verify your clearance.
CORRECTION - the Coast Guard falls under DHS during peacetime. However, they should still have access to JPAS.

The Coast Guard uses its own CAF and makes it’s own determination on clearance suitability. You can have your Command Security Office request and expedited reciprocity check or request an interim clearance.
