Marijuana use is currently prohibited under UCMJ Article 112. However, with many states legalizing its recreational use, how long before the military amends UCMJ Article 112, allowing its use? Having never used with marijuana, I cannot speak from experience, however it could be argued that it has less negative effects than alcohol or tobacco. A THC Breathalyzer is also on the market now.

Well here is a not so smart guys response to that and I will respond from an Army prospective. Most medical conditions currently being treated by Marijuana would probably be Medical Board conditions anyway. Listen the Army is forward very few REMF positions in the Army. Even if you had a condition that required Marijuana it would be like insulin dependency you could not deploy to war zone. So my answer would be never if I were in charge!

When?
1:After it is federally removed from the illicit drug schedule
2: After there is a instant read out test to confirm use (Like BAC is for Alcohol)
Once those two things happen, there is no reason it should not be allowed. People should make an adult, educated decision if any ingestion of a drug, be it nicotine, Alcohol, prescription or THC is a acceptable and ok thing.. so long as it does not affect one's duties.. IOW no being under the influence while on duty or in a position, status where recall to duty in a prescribed time line would be less that the drug effects lasted..

It won't. Some concerning side effects of THC include slowed reaction time, increased heart rate, lowering of blood pressure, and increased bleeding.

Do any of these sound like potential symptoms you would want in a soldier?

In that case, shouldn't we be concerned about the side effects of alcohol?

As a cerified drug recognition expert or DRE I can say that I hope it is never legal. The associated high with marijuana use is not correlated to its impairment as it is with alcohol. Although the "high" only lasts hours, the impairment on the body lasts for approximately a week. Even though it is legal in some states, users are in esence giving up their ability to drive as they would be impaired for a week after a single use. In the military this impairment puts lives at risk. I have given DUIs to people who smoked many days prior and were no longer high, but still impaired.

SSgt, can you please source any credible article where it shows THC effects the body in a cognitive or psychomotor way for more than several hours? According to every medical source I've read for research the effects of marijuana last no longer than 2 hours if smoked, 4-6 if heavily ingested. Not entirely sure how you are giving DUIs to those who were high days ago, if they haven't smoked since - unless of course they were drunk or high in the couple hours.

All LE drug recognition comes from nhtsa. In the effects section it say impairment is seen up to 24 hours after but from my experience in real world investigations it is up to many days after due to the scientific engineering of the thc levels in canibus today.

I would think never. It is not legal in the US in any state because of the Federal Law that describes it as a controlled substance with little or no medical use. The motor functions while on that particular illegal drug degrade your ability to move around safely, make critical decisions. On a ship that would be lethal in many cases. The same goes for the Air Force. Imagine an aircraft maintainer high while performing routine work on the plane. It is absolutely detrimental to good order and disciplne and has no business being involved with military service. If you are interested in seeing the effects of drug use and the Navy do some research of mishaps, accidents, and gross violations of duty just after Viet Nam. You might be surprised.

PO1, I doubt marijuana would be allowed on a ship, just as alcohol is not allowed on a ship. However in regards to leave or shore duty, if federally legalized, I cannot see any arguable reason for its prohibition.

Alcohol is permitted on ships now. I enjoyed a steel beach picnic while underway. Beers were limited to two per man, but some men don't drink at all and the tokens they used for their beers suddenly became quite valuable. Were the marijuana allowed on shore, you would find it impossible not to find on ship as it is now found on ships. Trying to stop that is akin to holding a fire breathing dragon by the tail.

Everyone I used to know that did use marijuana listens to a lot more music, but can do a lot less math. I'll keep the math.

This change will be slow in coming. The current command has a mindset against Marijuana and is unlikely to change that opinion because of state laws. It will probably take decades as people from states with legalized marijuana laws move in to command positions and have a top down change in perspective.

And if one is high or drunk, how does one work or shoot accurately? One can be of any sexual preference and shoot straight, but not drunk or high!

PV2 Aaron Bennett - however, pv2, we are on duty 24/7 -365 when we are active, and subject to recall at any moment. I remember being recalled when off duty or on holiday weekebds a few times, like in 92 labor day weekend

Never as many of the states that legalized it are now seeing the health side effects of drugs.

Much greater effect on the body than alcohol.

SSgt, would you mind posting a credible source? I have been looking and though I do see marijuana has side effects (smokeless has far less), I don't see any medical article showing where marijuana has anywhere close to the same harmful health effects alcohol has.

I have no idea if these are credible - government agencies. I agree alcohol is harmful as well. But must consume a lot and be on it along time. It is not as damaging to the brain - and in functional medicine - we all know when the brain gets out of whack - every thing else goes. https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/marijuana and http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=2338251

I do not disagree - but is the marijuana curing anything or is destructive like alcohol and smoking. Or is it like most drugs and just masking the real issue?
