I understand the general time you stay at a duty station is 3 years. I signed a 6 year contract and have been told that because it is my initial contract i will be at this duty station all six years. Is that correct ?

There are lots of exceptions. It's one year TOS if you request training like Airborne, reclass or Ranger. Your branch can easily waive that three year TOS to two years for selection for a broadening assignment.
Best options as an 11B: 75th RGR, Airborne, Ranger School TDY Enroute through your branch), SFAB, or 160th SOAR.
You almost definitely will not be at your first duty station for six years, but it's not impossible

I had enlisted for station of choice (1 year guarantee) I got orders before my year was up that took effect almost immediately after the 1 year point.

3 years time on station. You can not move until you meet the minimum time on station requirements. When you approach your 3 year mark, usually 6 months out, you will come on orders to PCS unless you extend at your current installation
