How many of you feel that Stateside bases are basically just like civiilian jobs after COB?

When I returned to the US after a second tour in Germany, I got stationed at Seymour-Johnson AFB and I noticed that there was zero camaraderie and after 1700, everyone scattered. I was pretty disappointed but it did really emphasize to me how incredible my experiences during 7 years in Germany were.

I noticed the same thing after being stationed in England for 5 years. Overseas personnel seem to be tighter than stateside troops.

I knew there was a difference but during the 5 years I was at DM between my two tours at Spang, we had a really tight nit shop and we did regular lunchtime cookouts and got together off duty to have some burgers and a few beers. I retired this past December and from what I've observed, things are only getting worse now.

Yah I lived in the UK 2 times. Once as a dependent (RAF Upper Heyford / 10yrs) and once active duty (RAF Lakenheath / 5yrs). There was always something going on overseas and everyone was hanging out. I retired in 2012 from McGuire AFB and once 16:00 hit, everyone just went their seperate ways.

Unfortunately that seems to be the case and with the new Evaluation system pitting us against one another I only see it getting worse.

I missed the closeness of my flight at Spang during the last 18 months before I retired, easily the most disappointing 18 months of my career. My wife and I knew everyone in the flight and their families, had many of them over during the holidays or just to throw some burgers on the grill.

I agree, the closest relations I have had were with guys I deployed with. The stateside AF is not the same as the overseas AF. Stateside is bogged down by too much politics and other distractions. Unit moral doesn't seem to be a priority stateside. Overseas seems more concerned about doing the job and that focus seems improve moral.
