I've been noticing more and more soldiers stationed on AFB's and wondering what they did to get there.  It's certainly not anything you can request on ASK nor ask for in retention.

I was stationed on an AFB when I was assigned to the 6th Ranger Training Battalion down in Florida.  Eglin AFB.  Hidden treasure of the Army if you can get the assignment.  Airborne qualified is a plus!

Years ago a friend mine was getting RIF'ed due to an overage of his very particular MOS.  There was ten in his MOS getting the boot.  One of the group read where the Navy had a severe shortage of that MOS especially at one base in particular.  Somebody pulled some strings, got a Congressman involved & they were all able to stay in & get assigned to a Navy base.  Now, I have been TDY to a AFB in England before.  We met quite a few who had issues with Army.  I ended up hanging out with some local Brits who were former SAS & I had a good time there.
