I can't comment on the deployed aspect of it. As for the rest. It's a good example of problems facing Veterans returning from combat. Are all Veterans dealing with the same stuff or in the same way? No. Some have it harder than others, and not everyone deals with it the same. This is why it's important to have a good support channel upon returning, and sometimes families are bad support channels for a multitude of reasons. The VA is understaffed, underfunded, it has employees that care but it also has employees that should not be allowed to work in that field.

Actually the VA is hit or miss depending on location. My grandfather gets exceptional care at the one he goes to in Vermont. My experiences weren't quite as good. I would call it mediocre at best. I have also heard horror stories. As with any organization there are some good places and some bad. Roll the dice and see what you get lol
