How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

Stick to the old rule; it's not going to kill you to it off when entering a building and can easily be put back on when you step outside. I was brought up with that rule as a sign of respect so it isn't as if it is confined to the military. You don't wear a hat in a building.

This happened to me when I was a SSgt. My family and I went to the Wendy's on base. A young Marine was in there with his wife. He happened to have his cover on. I was in civilian clothes so no rank was showing. I asked the Marine to remove his cover while indoors. He asked who I was. So I politely showed him my ID and asked for his. I also showed him the base CG policy on wearing ANY cover indoors. I told him he could take off the cover or leave. No shouting, no screaming. Situation handled.

There are MOS Marines inside most MCX situations who watch for this. Quietly and semi respectfully would be nice. As a retired MSgt, I always found out it was not them being an ass. Sometimes they forget, just like you forget your belt or to tuck your shirt in. If all day was spent patrolling the PX nothing else would get done

My first thought was, "what is a Marine doing in the MCX, in uniform, with his mommy?"

LTC (Join to see) I would say exactly, but I took my mother of 80 there also - LOL! Different situation altogether with this young Marine. Back in 1975 I wouldn't have been caught dead walking into the PX at Fort Ord, CA with either of my parents! Different time and different age! Retired now, don't mind taking either one!

I learned something new, didn't realize you could take your parent(s) on Post to go to the PX. I thought you could only take dependents.

Bottom line is YOU DO NOT WEAR A COVER, OR A HAT, INDOORS. Period. It was, and still is, this one(well there are several actually) things that always made me mad about the Army vs the Marines. I was taught as a kid growing up, you took your hat off when going into a building, or indoors. It was reinforced as a Marine recruit, and as a Marine. Bottom line is Army has no manners, does not teach them correctly, and gives not a single ^&%$ about them.

Sgm owns both of them for the most part. Young marine was very wrong for not removing the cover and even more wrong for not taking a correction properly. The officer COULD have waited until the marine was outside and finished his chewing then, but he was within his right to do so. Sgm did the right thing by removing the bad situation. But that young'n should have very little ass left because of this.

the one thing that was hammerred into me was praise in public, the rest in private, the young o was wrong the bx was not the place, the csm was right he took it outside from public view, maybe a little bit quieter would have been better, everybody has one of those wtf moments, no matter what service, how it is handled in the meantime is what counts, rank matters but take into consideration of location bx/px no

You guys are all a bunch of new age hippies. Treat everyone nice and be fair. BAH! You KILL people for a living. That is the USMCs one and only job. If you can't take an ass chewing, or give one for that matter; find a different job. This goes for all the services.

We are supposed to be a profession of arms, but in order to do that we have to maintain our professionalism. The big bosses in the executive branch and leading on down to the guys who get to make up their own uniform believe that we should look and act like businessmen. But how exactly is that professional for us? Its not. If you embarrass the shit of someone, or cause them pain (pain through physical training not a beating) they learn quicker and faster not to do those things again, or the cry about it and you know which guy will probably piss himself and put your other unit members at risk.

The military as a whole is in a downward spiral when it comes to discipline. WE are so concerned with being nicer to members of the armed forces that we have forgotten who and what we are. Think about this for a while before you respond as I am sure I have riled a few feathers.
