How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

In similar situations when I forgot my cover, the officer/nco/other enlisted simply got my attention, tapped his head and said "Your cover." That's all it took. I removed it and said "Ooops, thanks (sir)."

My brief, single enlistment half a lifetime ago makes me lean towards the officer grabbing a "decent ranked" NCO and asking him to correct the young Marines actions. However, there is nothing wrong with the officer handling it himself - as long as he uses the right approach. Personally - you follow the lawful orders of your superiors, PERIOD! I was a Machinist Mate in the Navy between 1998 - 2002, forward deployed in Sasebo Japan. While i cant claim "Old Navy", i'm definitely not for all this new age coddling. I understand that the officer has a standard of professionalism to maintain, but it should have NEVER come down to a shouting match. I couldnt imagine that happening at the NEX in Sasebo. SEVERAL NCO's would have told the Jr enlisted man that he was wrong and needs to correct his actions immediately! I shudder to think what may have happened if i used the young enlisted mans dialogue! Sheesh!

If this story is true....I feel the escalation was not necessary.
But if it happened it should be dealt with swiftly and energetically....it is first a Marine base, second a civilian shopping area! Lol!

Smoke that young Marine til his ass begs!!!! And then continue smoking him til he cannot beg.....

This story sucks. Needs additional details to determine actual events that may/may not have taken place. I'd like to know details of what both persons were wearing. If neither are in uniform, i'd question some random person questioning me, who the hell they were also. And if it is, some boot lieutenant, he/she may have got butt hurt by being talked to like that b/c they, like the junior enlisted doesn't know shit either, so then it becomes a testosterone girl shouting match. You may have the blind leading the blind here. I do agree with some other comments though, if indeed this guy was in a military uniform, there should be no reason he made it all the way to the check out stand with out being confronted previously to remove the cover.

Sgt John Hidrgo Sory you feel that way! It is what it is is and reported as accurately as my wife saw it standing about 12 - 13 feet away - She isn't in the habit of making up stories or embellishing them. She's married to a Colonel remember. She understands Military Bearing and Courtesys and she isn't in the habit of lying about something like this to me "The Old Man!" They were in uniform and it happened the way I described - believe me I double-checked before posting it. I'm an Admin here on RallyPoint (Volunteer by the way) and I don't embellish on my discussions - my wife believe the young Marine put his cap on since he was next in line and close the the exit (she doesn't believe he was weraing it throughout the store, but can't confirm). The way the Junior Officer approached him in front of his mother could have set him off (don't know) didn't here that part, but when he replied loudly everyone heard the young Marine! You have the story John, so I can tell you much more, except I was looking for feedback on how or if this occurred what is the best approach to take corrective action - that is what I was really looking for - somehow this discussion question has turned into a "Ripply's believe it or not" circus! Oh well!

Don't wear your cover indoors unless you're armed and have the respect to do the right thing and remove it if you forget and are reminded by someone

I have known and worked with Marines almost 25+ years and this just doesn't sound right. A young Marine would have fallen all over himself if a JO came up to him to ask him to remove his cover. Most JO's that I have known would have called the Marine off to the side to tell him to remove his cover. If in fact the situation escalated, the Sergeant Major's reaction would have been acceptable though I doubt he would have placed hands on the young Marine.

LT Carl Martin Got it - I've heard the same thing from others and then there are some in this discussion that have had one or two incidents similar. Don't disgree with your comments about the JO and the Marine, but unfortunately for whatever reason that isn't what happened. The SgtMaj did in afct grab the Marine because of the escalation and thus the mother screaming "take your hands off my boy!" Pretty clear to my wife who is pretty intelligent and doesn't embellish any story. I trust her account of the incident. I was looking for more feedback on how the situation should have been handled LT and you did mention one thing that the JO should have maybe taken him off to the side as to not embarass him in front of others or his Mother - that may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Thanks for that advice - good one!

I have heard similar things happening and while I was still in the Marines myself it happened to me. With several key differences.
I did not have my mother with me.
I was not stupid and cuss at a supposed officer. The guy was in civies like myself.
There was a Gunny in line behind me that laughed the whole time and asked if there was any trouble.
I was in civies and he asked me to turn my hat around if not take it off completely.

The issue was that I had finished checking out and the check out lady had reminded me of my hat. She put it on for me which caused the Gunny to chuckle given it was massively crooked and slightly backwards. I thanked her and started on my way and then this guy yells to me to remove my cover. Now I was still in SOI and this was weekend libo and naturally still greenhorn I automatically assumed that anybody in civies might be an officer so I said no can do sir my hands are full. He laughed, I laughed and he offered to do it for me. I mention that where I am from only girls touch the mans hat and that my cover was part of my uniform. More laughter and the Gunny was joining in and we walked out civil like.

I have seen similar things in the Army both growing up and serving after the Marines. Never quite played out like the afore mentioned story though.

This whole think sounds bizzare, I can't imagine a marine boot, mouthing off to an officer or any rank let alone a junior one. Nor do I see the officer getting into a shouting match as well. This paints the picture that discipline in the Marine Corps has completely broken down and I can't believe that.

SMSgt William Hassiepen It happened the way my wife described it - I trust her account of the situation. I think this a remote incident and not reflective of any one service branch. I've seen these types of incidents happen before in my last 37 years of service. They are isolated, but do happen. SMSgt you are entitled to believe what you want, but please don't disrespect what my wife witnessed and provided to me above. I personally confirmed with the employees she works with at the MCX, where I frequent on a regular basis to pick and drop on my wife. I was looking for feedback on how (if this happened again) in any service branch or location, how should the situation be handled by our future leaders? That was the discussion question - thanks and have a good day!

First of all I wasn't being disrespectful, I served for 22 years and have I seen enlisted blow their stacks at junior officers, yes, I for one have. What I was saying is if a recruit spouted off at an officer, there has to be something wrong in the military. This is not the first incident I have heard. I watched the military degenerate since the time I enlisted back in 1978, up to the time I retired in 2000 where I was "asked" to retire, being told that I was a throwback to an area where our "new and enlightened" military no longer needed dinosaurs like me anymore. What I don't understand is why didn't the officer have the MP's called. Have the punk arrested, let him stand mast, give him the blue place special as I hear the Navy and Marine Corps called it. This is a military where they counsel you on "diversity" rather than warfighting, recruits get "stress cards" in basic training. Yes I do believe that discipline has gone out the window in our current military.
