How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

There seems to be an important element left out of this story. Who was in uniform? Who was not?

What I see in this PVT's future is a lot of extra duty, extra training and possible partial forfeiture of one or more paychecks!
SGM did a good job of de escalating the situation, after the Officer allowed it to get out of hand.
Back when I was in, the ONLY proper response to an Officer's order was "YES SIR" and immediate compliance with the order.
In more than one situation when I was approached by somebody who's rank was unknown to me, my immediate response was "YES SIR", even though it was "merely" a NCO who was senior to me, or as in a couple of instances, people whom I actually "ranked"! The PVT's response in this instance was completely unacceptable under any circumstances!
As for the Officer, it would seem that some extra training would be in order, hopefully the SGM acquired his unit, etc. after appropriately "dressing down" the PVT and obtaining his information, while having him in the "front lean and rest position".
Apologies Col. Burroughs for my initial response, based as it was upon the "smell test", and previous tales from former Marines of the disciplinary standards of the Corps.

There is no right or wrong way the Marine wearing his cover indoors is wrong. As long as the JO doesn't insult his mother all good. The Enlisted Marine getting defensive when he is in the wrong is wrong again.............................we arent in a PC club its the Marines rules and regulations to follow. JO was not disrespectful "take off your cover" good to go.

I won't say it didn't happen, because I have seen some really bizarre stuff in my 34 years of service...but sounds a little far fetched.

CW3 Kevin Storm It happened chief - I have confidence in my wife's ability to report as she seen it! She's pretty well versed in military customs and courtesy!

May I also add so that we are clear... that the only other call for cover indoors is in Mess

Can't believe this story. No self respecting Marine CSM would "escort" an offending junior enlisted out the door. He would make him drop and give him 5 gabillion and 2 push ups.

PO1 Donald Hammond That is certainly you prerogative to not believe anything you read on RP, but it happened just the way my wife reported it. I have confidence in her ability as a Colonel's wife to report the facts. Because there were other employees around watching the whole incident the SgtMaj excorted them both out quickly. I liked to get your feedback on the question I orginally asked: "How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?" Thanks

Know your D AND C anyone under arms are allowed to wear cover indoors... and a nco or co thatr is wearing a utility belt is considered under arms. if a troop was wearing cover and not under arms them correction and or minor discipline is warranted and justified.

Marine should not have been wearing his cover indoors. Everyone is focusing on how they corrected the marine instead of how to keep the problem from happening again. Individual discipline is the cause of this whole mess.

As I was a CPL in the Corps, I had times where some Marines under the rank I held, wanted to challenge me. I always kept my cool, and if not in uniform show them my ID to proof who I was. Then would ask to see theirs and ask what unit they were in. Never saw anything like this. Not saying it did not happen, crazier things have happened, but if it did the Officer did not handle himself in accordance to what we were taught. He should have done as I said I did, and then the Marine should have locked up and said yes sir, sorry sir. and did as requested. If the were in uniform the Marine should not have said anything and just took the cover off. I can say though that even when I was in we had those Marines who thought the rules only applied to everyone else and not themselves.
