How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

In the Army you are only allowed cover indoors unless you are reporting for pay (When we got paid cash.) Under arms for security and funeral detail.

Moving past possible embellishment likely to occur over repeats of the story...I assume the enlisted Marine was fairly young and green and the junior Marine officer was likely the same, just with a bit more luster on his collar. Here is the recipe for disaster: take two young, gawky Marines, one enlisted and one officer while keeping one mother and a SM in reserve ...sprinkle the officer with more authority than he can hold and blend the officer, enlisted Marine, SM and mom together in a recreational container. Tasty.

Handled badly all the way around. Would have got his name and where he worked and went to his boss. Jr O and SGT Major yelling in a public forum is not that much better. Unprofessional in public. My opinion.

Maj Marty Hogan Agreed - there were a number of leadership and personal conduct errors made by all of the individuals involved.

At first jump COL Mikel J. Burroughs I can't believe the young Marine would spout off like that- in front of his mother of all people. Horrible military bearing.

Maj Marty Hogan - I found it very hard to believe myself, but it was confirmed by several other store personnel, my wife, and two of her associates that worked for her. Like I said, a lot of people were scared by the shouting and actually took cover in the store - it scared them. The mother wasn't helping the situation either by saying and spouting off to the other Marine who asked the lower enlisted Marine to remove his cap (even though he was close to going out the door about 2 feet away). Then the SGM yelling across the store, with his family right behind him had to be embarrassing for the family. Just a lot that went wrong in a short period of time. Finally they all three got outside and had a come to Jesus meeting. As you can see by the other comments, not many Marines want to believe that one of their own could make a mistake and then there are some that admit every one makes mistakes (sometimes) and that is what their are leaders for - to make corrections (hopefully in the right way!) At the time two of them thought they were and it just got out of hand - period!

I think that the younger Marine should of respected the other Marines rank. Especially if he was just being nice about it. Unfortunately there's people like that who do get mad over being corrected. I had a situation where my collar devices were messed up, I asked how to fix them and did not get an answer but got laughed at. I walked away and asked someone else to help and than corrected them.

SGT Robert George I'm sure there was some extra duty for that youngster after that episode - no doubt in my mind!

If the young man was in the wrong , he should be a man and fess up. Never heard of an enlisted person being overly stupid with an officer, unless he was looking for a way out of the military.

Wow! Just wow! That was ridiculous. First, how did he make it all the way to checkout without someone saying, "Hey man you still have your cover on." Second, why did he take the defensive and cuss out the Junior Officer, very unprofessional. Third, why did the Junior Officer react in a way that was unbecoming of an officer. Just so many things wrong with this. And on my final note, I would be so embarrassed if my mom said that. Just me though.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - That could be possible about putting his hat on too soon. Big mistake on his part. I always wait until I'm closer to the door unless my hands will be full but even then I don't put it on in the checkout lane. haha. It just feels weird.

TSgt Melissa Post I can tell you that when I was a PFC back in Fort Ord, CA I had my head up my you know what and I put my cover on too early leaving the Dining Facility one day and I paid dearly for it with a royal "butt chewing" from a 1SG that was right behind me. He waited until I was out the door and stopped me dead in my tracks and of ocurse I came to immediate attention and he said "parade rest soldier" and chewed my butt. I just said yes First Sergeant and it won't happen again. I don't know where my head was that day, but it reminded me never to forget again or day dreaming about something else wehn entering or departing the building. I was 17 years old and still wet behind the ears - the First Shirt dried me off very quickly!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - haha I would be impressed if there was a soldier/airman/marine/seaman who hasn't either forgotten to take their cap off or forgot to put it on at least once in their career.

TSgt Melissa Post Ha ha - read all the comments there are some who said that me and my wife made up the story and a lot that thought their service branch was so perfect that this could have never happened. Veyr interesting responses, but most of them were professional and answered the question. It is what it Is! Thanks for your feedback!

First: The Junior Officer should have identified himself.
Second: One he identified himself and was giving an order by a superior officer. He should have removed his cover, even if it was for 30 seconds until he got out the door.
Third: When he did not remove his cover and answered with the answered he should have got his name rank and what unit. Went to his commanding officer and dealt with it. Cause that would have been much worse, instead of making a scene of this caliber.
Fourth: The Mother, I could see a mother doing this. But if he was a Marine he would have done informed his mother of this kind of issue of disrespect.
Fifth: If this is the kind of Marines that is coming out of boot camp about respect. Then they need to be some serious changes.

I am reading some of these post and a lot of them sound the same. Yes I am a Marine Corporal and was stupid once. I suffered the results of my actions. The point is I was stupid once. I hear these other Marines say this could not happen in my Corps. No, it shouldn't have. Just like the parents say " My kid wouldn't do that ". Everyone will test the boundaries once, yes " Your kid (Marine ) would do that " I would say the Marine in question did not see the light of being extra duty free for a very long time, even dug some fox holes in the motor pool was my favorite one.
