How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

The Marine was most likely in civilian clothes with a hat (cover) on as I cannot see any circumstance a Marine would wear his cover indoors, not armed. It just doesn't purposefully happen.

Now here is where it gets fun. If both Marines were in civilian clothes, no one is giving ground until one or the other proves they are out-ranked. Even then, if one is a grunt and one a POG, the grunt would only give-in if the other significantly outranked him. The situation was compounded by him not wanting to be a bitch in front of his mom. I've been in this situation a few times off base. They started going tit-for-tat in a testosterone match and SgtMaj, who outranks by shear power everyone involved, set thing straight by establishing him as the Alpha Dog.

Hat marine was wrong by the way. The rules say "off" when in civilian attire, on a base.

Cpl Elijah Gordon Unfortunately, Cpl Gordon he was in uniform and so was the Junior Officer that took corrective action immediately, and the SgtMaj that took them both outside out of the public eye. I confirmed the entire incident with my wife, her co-workers and the MCX employee on duty at the cash register, which is located right by the exit door at the MCX (Camp Pendleton, CA). This is a special register for Marines in uniform to get in and out quickly while on duty, so they don't have to wait in a long line. The junior enlisted was at the cash register about to be checked out and 2 feet from the door when he placed his cover on his head and was immediately corrected by the Junior Officer in Line behind him and the incident then took on the life that I described above - everyone needs to get over the fact that it did happen and that my question above was:

"RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SMA, or the mother? What would you have done?"

That would make no sense for him not to have been in uniform. How would the officer have known he was a marine at all and not just someone escorting a family member with a short haircut??? Definitely in uniform.

The young marine was dead wrong. He should have gotten a boot party, and the SM Would have been completely within his rights if he would have beaten him.

SPC Brody Vidrine We know that our Senior NCOs don't beat our young soldiers, sailors, marines, airman, and coast guard sailors physically (not in this itme of our service), but they can definitely inject the fear of God and level of discipline that they wish they were beaten instead.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - This all depends on the time period, I've from the old Corps and my dad was a Marine during WWII. Yes we got slapped around when we did not do as told. But this was during Boot Camp, by the time we were not in Boot Camp anymore we knew better to things of this nature. I've had my butt chewed many times for smaller infractions than this wearing a cover indoors. Just my memories from half a century ago.

I've seen some stupid in my almost 7 years in the guard including a deployment and I can see something like this happening with how the new soldiers are being treated from day one. I've seen fresh from basic/boot camp soldiers do some incredibly stupid thing that I thought simply disgraceful, only to find out they were never taught better. Basic has become to relaxed due to new policies, speaking from the army standpoint at least.

Now the marine should have never asked any questions about who asked him to remove his cover and should simply have turned around to identify rank and said "thank you sir". Being questioned in a very rude and extremely unprofessional manner like that I can understand why the office may have gotten pissy about it. Full out shouting match though again unprofessional. Now the sma I would say handled it very well by quickly defusing the situation. The mother should have kept her mouth shut and realized she raised a disrespectful asshat.

I myself am guilty on occasion or two to have forgotten my cover entering a building. I was asked to remove my cover and promptly did so realizing I had forgotten to and thanked the person who asked, with proper military greetings of course.

Regardless of rank if someone respectfully corrects you for a uniform infraction such as that you should fix yourself and thank them. I've seen senior nco's and senior officers be corrected. It was done respectfully and said personnel corrected themselves and thanked the person that pointed out what was wrong. The end of the day we all wear the same uniform and are all brothers/sisters in arms and should look out for each other. Even if it is something as small as a minor uniform infraction

I believe this was handled properly as that is the job of a SGM he is not to correct the officer as that will come to his chain of command. There were probably more and lower ranked NCO's that should have done this first thank you SGM for upholding the discipline in the military.

Something doesn't sound right here....If a young Marine is in the wrong, no way he is going to say Who the F are you.....If he did, I hope he gets run up.

Sgt Andrew Gabryszak In all my days in the service I've seen some unusual things happen with soldiers, sailors, marines, and airman that don't pass the "common sense" test - that is why there is the UCMJ and Leadership that take corrective action. If you read down further there is a post by an individual that owrks at the MCX who has witness this behavior as well. I had to confirm it as well, even though I know my wife doesn't exaggerate anything when she reports it from work. She has sense left the MCX and we have moved to Castel Rock, CO since this incident. Its been hard for many other Marines to think for a minute that one of their own could have said such a thing, but believe me it happened as reported. Based on his being removed by the SGM I'm sure he was disciplined properly!

As a junior marine myself, I know just to listen to anyone higher than you. You don't rate so why try.

The marine in line was wrong right off the bat, another enlisted decided to do what was rightand asked him to remove his cover in doors, which is right, civilian or not asking someone who the f@$k are you means he just lost his manners when we're suppose to be the example for the people, that was a poor decision on the marines behalf

oh, crap is the only thing i can think of concerning this - that "young" Marine ain't gonna like life fora WHILE!!!!! and "mommy" ain't gonna see him for a while either. as for the "young" officer type - oh, i'm sure he's gonna get some good closed door counseling and the CSM will be part of that also. ouch to both. but i do like the part about the "silence" after he said something.
