How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

Okay whether I'm a wife or not of someone in the service I know enough yes please take the cover off while your in the building..and yes show some respect but I think what should have happened is when the boy started yelling the officer should have not said a word back grabbed the boy by the arm and walked out side and then yelled at him back but that clearly didn't happen lol

The exchange is where a lot of corporals and sergeants go for their courses to desensitize the ability to correct Marines. It's random and if the kid out his cover on inside what did he expect to happen?
Lip off to someone while they correct you? Yeah ur lucky if you don't get your ass kicked later.

They were both wrong on how they handled it. The young marine should of never put his cover on inside. The office was correct in telling him to take it off. However did he identify himself? Then when the yelling escalated this should of not happen and they should of taken out of the public view.

The SgtMjr was correct. They were BOTH acting in a manner unbecoming the Uniform. That having been said, the junior officer needs to learn how to handle minor disciplinary matters in a manner that leaves both no room for it to escalate AND for both sides to retain their honor after the encounter. As a retired officer, I would have handled it more like "Sony, I know that you are in a hurry and may have become distracted by the presence of your mother, but regulations require that you remove your cover while indoors, so just remove your cover and I will forget that I saw it happen, ok?

SGM Is fully in the right...the junior officer started off right, but he fell into a precipice by reacting to the defensive young Marine...the junior officer should not have allowed the situation to escalate in the given public setting...as the SGM pointed out...young Marine was totally wrong...possibly trying to impress mom...mom was in the right... Why?...because she's mom and it's her duty...but SGM was right to remove the instigator to an area where he could properly dress him down and get his particulars so he could pass it on to the Marine's chain-of-command...and then hand him off to mom...I can very well understand this actually happening...

Although the young officer was correcting the young Marine on proper uniform where especially in a check out line and the young Marine was most definitely in the wrong for both wearing his cover inside the building in the first place and then yelling at the officer as well also the junior Marine should've have taken his cover off when corrected by his higher up to even though the junior officer may have been in which the young Marine felt was a boot Marine officer and the junior officer was also in the wrong for getting Into a shouting match as well as the young Marine when he first said something about the situation and the young Marine got defensive his next response should've been who is you squad leader platoon commander and company commander this way the young Marine would've one corrected himself and been dealt with appropriately in proper manner as for the Sergeant major his response was in appropriate for the situation and dealing with it to all Marines both enlisted and officers are taught from the very beginning from boot camp that your to never wear your cover inside of a building both in uniform and out of uniform unless if in uniform and your either the corpal of guards or Sergeant of guards and on duty with your duty belt or an mp on duty in uniform with your duty belt on .

For the SgtMaj. absolutely not. For the young Marine who was insubordinate and disobeyed a direct order. Take him to Mast, reduction in rate by one pay grade, 45 days restriction to the barracks with 45 days extra duty. As for Mommie dearest, somebody should have told that bitch to shut the fuck up.

Honestly this whole story seems really odd to me... Idk what they are doing in the marines, but if ANY enlisted rank said something like that to an officer... There's no telling what might happen to that person, first off... And second off throughout basic training they make it a HUGE deal to always have your PC off in doors, because of respect. So it should be second hand nature now to not have it on. And the sergeant major had ALLLLLLLL the right in the world to escort that marine out. As for his mom, she must be very new to the marine life, because if she wasn't she'd know that the SM was only doing his job.

SPC (Join to see) I've seen a lot of odd things over the last 37 years of service Amanda - this didn't surprise me. I've seen and witnessed similar incidents throughout my career as an enlisted soldier for over 9 years while serving on active duty from 75 to 80, during deployments to South America, oversea tour in Belgium, and during my deployment. With so many people serving in the military its not going to be uncommon for someone or an individual to lose their military bearing in some form or fashion. The key is it's isolated events, not a common occurrence, but they do happen! Thanks for responding and have a great Army Day!

Assuming this really happened, I think the SgtMaj was the most correct. Never wear your cover indoors, but also carry yourself in a manor that represents the Corps properly. I don't leave for bootcamp until December and I already realize I represent the Marine Corps and should carry myself as such.

The officer had every right to tell him to take it off...that Marine had no right occording to regs to wear his cover indoors.....as for the SgtMaj he did what SgtMajs doo best he dug in that Marines Ass and for good reason And the officer shouldnt have let it get to the point of a shouting match bring forth this SgtMaj....he should have used he's teachings as an officer to control his Marine and if That Marines mom had taught him any respect as a child she wouldn't have had to witness this behavior.....Thus Marine should be Discharged for failure to Conform to Military Standards....but thats my opinion
