How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

Initially handle properly except the junior officer should have taken the name found the marines CO and advised them of what occured. Sgt Major is god and they all will suffer!

Sgt Major was completely right. Grab them both by the collar and pull their asses outside. There are children in there, and that behavior is unbecoming of an officer in the Marines. Hell they are lucky Sgt Major isn't making them push or dig 50 cal pits for the next lifetime.

The marine disrespected a senior officer and the mother should keep her trap shut before she makes things worse for her son.

If it was just a little ways from the exit I can see someone dawning their cover before exiting a px, happens all the time at Stumps, hell even I've done cause I had stuff to carry and the doors are literally about 30 feet from the check out lines.
Also was this young officer in or out of uniform ? I can't see any PFC or LCPL giving shit to a clearly marked officer.
As for the SgtMaj I can see that part actually happening.
As for the young marines mother..
She can shout all she wants her son belongs to the corps now, if she doesn't like it then tough shit !

Maybe both are millennial generations and only big difference one is an officer and one is enlisted... oh well, enlisted guy better prepare for trouble. As I noticed with younger airmen now, that they think they are equal or has more rights than older NCOs, cant even tell them to clean up after themselves. and some has audacity to answer back for example if you tell them to take the trash out, some answer back saying why can you do it yourself? and due to its the whiny air force and airmen are untouchables, instead I have to tell them the story that once long time ago, we have GI parties where we airmen have to clean up the whole building and if you don't show up you get in trouble. and sometimes we have to paint rocks.

Wow just had this pop up in my feed and I am glad it did. What we are seeing is the change in people with the newest generation of young service members. This example is the same as the young sailor who sat through colors while recording it. We have many young service members that are challenging to leaders today though I admit that hearing about it in the corps surprises this doc. The SgtMaj handled this well from my view and I am sure the junior officer heard something from him or another senior enlisted about his behavior as well.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
PO1 Todd Cousins You made a good point about today's younger service members (no all of them), but there are a few out there that are testing the establishment. Discipline saves lives in peacetime and in war! I was very surprised when my wife first told me about and I said the same thing many have said on this post - No Way, not a Marine! So, I had to verify it through other witnesses and the stories all matched!

I expected marines to be more respectful then that that marine deserves what he got

This is a great learning point. I have not been in the corps but as a senior NCO with 31 years of service, I have seen my share of this scenario. It sounds like this took place on a training post. Either way. Both the officer and the marine were out of line. An old line from my sergeants major "praise in public correct in private". This does not say whether the officer was in uniform or ID'd themselves. Now for the sergeants major (or the proper name for the E9 in the marines). The only issue I see is putting his hands on a soldier (marine) with out lawful justification. Now before I'm crushed with negative remarks, this is based off facts presented by the Col. First action, deescalate the situation. Move it out of the public eye. The E9 will need to assess the situation and make corrective action and notifications if necessary. We sr nco's are the professionals we are to lead by example.
