How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

1SG Harold Piet Sorry there 1SG it wasn't BS - it happened the way I reported it. I've seen happen before with other service branches as well during my 37 years of service. Now back to the question at hand - was it handled properly by all involved in your opinion? Thanks

CSM is the only one that handled it correctly, because it had already got out of hand. I still have hard time believing a young marine would act that way. I cannot imagine any of my soldiers responding that way from my day and time.

The Sergeants Major did the right thing. The young marine should be taken to the motor pool for the next 4 Saturdays and Sundays to move a 5 ton dump truck load of dirt from one end to the other with a wheel barrow. The young officer should have to supervise the young mating during the detail. Hell, bring mom along so she can see there's no mama boys in the Corps.

Excuse me sir, but are we not supposed to remove our cover when entering a building?

PVT Lewis Woodard I'm sure when and what type of building your referring to, but as long as I've served in the military (37 years) I've always removed my cover when going into the PX or any facility on post or off post. Please explain?

1. No one starts a true story with "this is a no-shitter
2. A non-chain of command officer would be out of line for engaging in a shouting match
3. The mother is clueless
4. The Sargeant-Major came the closest to handling the situation correctly
5. Here I am, having gotten sucked into this slumber-party question. I don't like it. I don't like junior-high slumber-party questions. I don't like them being used as Facebook posts to lure me over here to see what the hell is going on. If this continues I'm out of here.

PO1 Glenn Roesener I don't take offense to your comments in Item No 1 and 5. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Keep in mind that I don't post lies or make-up "junior-high slumber-party questions" Glenn - not in my character after serving this nation for 37 years (9 years enlisted and 28 year commission) or my age of 60. Comparing RP to Facebook is almost silly, but that is your entitlement. Your professional response in Items 2, 3, and 4 were appreciated. The event happened and it has happened before in my 37 year career - that is why there are NCOs, JO, and the UCMJ. Unfortunately crap like this happens in the service branches in various forms and incidents. This includes loss of military bearing, assault, direct viloations of following direct orders, sexaul assault, awol, desertion, and the list goes on. Its unfortunate, but I've brought charges against all of the above throughout my career. RP is a professional site where we can explore these type of questions from a leadership standpoint. Sorry you missed the true meaning and point. Have a good day!

Didn't miss the point. Here's an exercise: reqdcthrough the OP through the view of someone who doesn't know you from Adam. From that standpoint, it's highly unusual for a person to devote as much time as you did in reassuring us it was a true story, and the text does not read like a 60+ year-old Colonel. In this age of Internet, many are clamoring for attention by posting made-up stories, resulting in highly cynical readers such as myself. COL Mikel J. Burroughs -

PO1 Glenn Roesener - Thanks for your feedback Glenn - the real exercise was to get leadership input on how it should have been handled properly. If you read some of the great leadership responses they hit some excellent points. Don't really care if individuals believe it or not at this point. Have a great day!

By "Young Marine" are you referring to the youth organization similar to the Boy Scouts or an actual junior enlisted Marine? The former is plausible, but the latter is not.

LCpl Jesse Hauch There is a 50/50 split among your brothers and sisters in the Marines and the different service branches on whther this could have happened. Yes, he was young Marine Pvt. With as many indiviudals that are in uniform and after serving 37 years from 1975 to 2012 with 9 years as an enlisted soldier and 28 years as a commissioned service I've seen this and other lack of discipline issues. Many. That is why we have the UCMJ and the NCO Corps throughout our military branches to handle these type of infractions. Crap happens and this happened. Now, back to the question: "Was it handled properly by all involved?" Your feedback is welcome for that question. Thanks

Cpl Nathan Benjamin Fritog Sorry you feel that way Nathan. I think was some very stupid crap on the part of the JO and Pvt. Thanks for answering the question. COL (RET) Mikel!
