How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

It needs to be a superior to confront him on it, from there it's by the book!

No, actually any rank can confront or correct any rank of any branch, you just HAVE to be correct or it's hell to pay. But you don't have to out rank someone to correct them. An E-1 can correct an O-10, but the E-1 better be correct and better use tact.

On the face this situation, two wrongs do not make a right.
1. The Marine should never have been covered.
2. The mother should have known her place as to structure and function of her son's role as a Marine. She should have known her place and not commented.
3. The senior Marine had every right to insist the young Marine remove his cover.
4 The young Marine was instructed but he forgot how to be respectful.

Either escort him out or knock the cover off his head and get his mother to explain about wearing one inside !

There is an old adage which says "Praise in public; criticize in private." You don't embarrass subordinates in front of their peers, or their subordinates, period. You get him off to the side, then correct him, or rip him a new one, depending upon the severity of the infraction. But you don't do it in public.

Doesn't wash with me.
a) any young service member (assuming they graduated basic) would immediately remove the hat, unless under arms.
b) addressing an junior officer like that would be suicidal, as the training from basic would kick in,
c) young officer (assume O-1) would not be yelling at the troop. As a wet-behind the ears O-1 (Air Force), even I knew better that a calm voice and dead-flat eye stare gets their focus,
d) the Marines don't have CSMs,
e) the senior NCO would not be yelling at the O-1, other than 'I got this LT!' That is the nature of senior NCOs, to lead the troops in getting stuff accomplished while shepherding the young officer past the larval stage of leadership-by-the-book into becoming a junior leaders that can look ahead to what will need to be done tomorrow, next week or next year.

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
Capt Kevin Tanzer I agree with a) and most do, but unfortunately when embarrassed in front of a Mother (that seem to be a little off). Unfortunately, ALL could have handles the situation differently. Got it on d) they are SgtMaj and he did yell at both across the MCX. It happened and I was looking for feedback on all the things that were done wrong and how they should have been handled - thanks

David Wawrzyniak Not sure on the response. Do you think it was handed properly or could it have been handled differently?

Well if it's still the same Corps as when I was in. That officer should've taken that marine outside and smoked his ass. The sgtmaj should've if the officer didn't. The Marine was disrespectful. Officer says jump. You say how hi.

LCpl Donald Faucett Same here - back in 1975 as a private I wouldn't have said a word and ripped that cover off my head. I can tell you as a private I made mistakes like that once and that was it. I've seen a different service members as late as 2012 when I retired that feel they are entitled and can talk back - it's happening in remote cases, but happening non-the-less!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs - Sir, as a Marine Private in the 70's you would know better than to do that. I still do it today if I'm in a Government building. Insubordination would get you sent to the Correctional Custody Platoon. (Worse than boot camp lol)
