How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?

NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!

RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?

THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015

CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."

I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks

If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"

RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.

A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

Calmly in public. Too many families to shout. Scaring little kids. But do have respect and remove your cover inside. We were taught that in basics and should have been programned into his mindset as a Marine anyway.

This is why God created non-commissioned officers. No officer should get into a shouting match with an enlisted member. If a non-com is nearby, hand the problem over to him/her. If no non-com is available, simply state the obvious truth, "I'm sorry, Lance-Corporal" (or whatever), that you can't see things the correct way. If we cannot come to an understanding, I can arrange a conversation between you and your Commanding Officer over a green felt table. Your call. I'll accept your decision either way."

It's on his superior officer to handle, they don't have a thing called chain of command for nothing. All you can do is make sure you, yourself am in 100% compliance, let the chain of command do what it is there to do. However, if an activity is life threatening, or risks a serious injury, better to speak up, risk punishment, but at least have peace of mind.

Had it been me as a sgt E5 I would have taken him aside and reminded him of uniform wearing
Regulations Marines only wear a
Cover indoors if under arms.

The respectful thing was for the young Marine too remove the cover. Discipline is the key to training which could save a life. The young Marine was wrong. The mother should have stayed out of it.

The young marine needs to learn more respect. The Sergeant Major did what was need to get the point across. The mother needs to learn that the marines don't have time to tells someone twice to do anything. The second time they have to be told could cost them their life. The young marine needs to learn that being a marine is not an 8 to 5 job. IT IS A WAY OF LIFE. RESPECT is always required at all times NOT just on base or when you get out. It is also for life.

While you are on active status you conduct yourself accordingly, you are never truly off duty. You can never forget who you are after discharge , a Veteran who served with honor and respect.

This is how young marines act these days and its ms fault as well as the corp. Life has been made to easy in boot. The SgtMaj. Did the right thing by escorting him out. The young marine needs to be bent and given another round of boot camp with the sgtmaj. In my opinion

Sgt Darwin Merkes I truly believe there are only that lose their military bearing in any service branch. This isn't the norm in my opinion, but it does happen - that is why we have NCO's and Junior Leaders that take charge. Thanks for responding Darwin!
