How should a situation in the MCX about wearing a cover in the building be handled properly?
NEITHER MYSELF OR MY WIFE ARE IN THE HABIT OF TELLING A LIE OR MAKING UP A STORY - IT HAPPENED! FOCUS ON THE QUESTION - NOT WETHER YOU BELIEVE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED OR NOT!
RP Members was this handled properly by the Junior Officer, SgtMaj, or the mother? What would you have done?
THIS WAS A REAL SITUATION THAT TOOK PLACE YESTERDAY 12/30/2015
CORRECTION: I've receive collaboration from another lady who also had firsthand knowledge of this incident in the MCX - "The "youth" was not an AD USMC, but part of a group of Young Marines. Her description of this group is that it is one for troubled youth to attempt to instill discipline and maybe bring them into the fold."
I apologize to all of those individuals that I stood firm on with, that it was young Marine Private (based on all the information I received), but the discussion, question, and feedback on how the situation was handled by the Junior Officer, Sgt Mgr, and Mother have been outstanding - that I don't apologize for - thanks
If anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and my wife called me at home immediately following the incident - she knew I would enjoy hearing about it. I just said, "that SgtMaj owns that young Marine!"
RP Members this one comes from the wife that works at Camp Pendleton, CA Marine Base in the MCX.
A young "Youth" Marine was in the check-out line with his mother and "CORRECTION" (put his cover on inside!) He was approached by a AD Marine (Junior Officer) and asked to remove the cover. Immediately the young "Youth" Marine took up the defensive and asked the junior officer "who the F*** are you?" The Junior Officer then got into the young "Youth" Marine's face and told him to have some respect and remove the cover - it escalated into a shouting match in the check-out line in the MCX. Coming from the back of the store there was a loud roar from a Sergeant Major in the Marines (built like a tank according to my wife). He bellowed, "both of you shut your mouth there are families in here!" The MCX went silent and several employees and Marines hit the deck (no kidding). The SgtMaj came to the front and grabbed the young "Youth" Marine the by collar escorting him and the Junior Officer out of the MCX with the Young "Youth" Marine's mother yelling, "don't touch my boy!"

To the woman, "Excuse me Ma'am". Immediately to the Junior Marine, "Step Aside and don't move an inch". To the 'covered' Marine, "You are on Report. Report to blah blah blah, now remove your cover until you exit this building.
To the Junior Marine, speaking 'quietly', " Get your M..... F...... A.. outta here before I Shove your head so far up your A.. you blah blah blah.
LMAO

COL Mikel J. Burroughs
MSgt Steve Dominguez Great example - I've caught myself downrange getting ready to enter a PX on one of the FOBs and got my cover off at the last second. My mind was in another zone. Crap happens and thats why they call it Crap. I believe the young man could have handled it better, as well as the JO and then the mother coul dhave kept her mouth shut and the SgtMaj didn't even have to get involved. It was just one of those day!

Only Time I was allowed to wear my cover indoors is when I was under arms as an MP, other then that it came off. That Marine should have said "Roger that Sir I apologize for having my cover on indoors" and Mom needs to realize her son is in the Military not her, she does not outrank anyone, and yelling " Don't touch my boy" at a CSM. All she needs to know is her son screwed up and now he's going to give his soul to God because his ass belongs to the CSM

Should have been handled with a little more finesse than it was. It sounds like the officer approached in a discreet manner. The young Marine should have responded with a lot more respect, (even if the officer was wearing civvies). As far as the SgtMaj is concerned, he did the right thing. They are the ones who can get away with dressing down a jr. officer when he's blatantly wrong.

Your comment was correct except for one detail: Yes, one of the many tasks a Sergeants Major has (as do all Senior Staff NCOs) is to respectfully advise young officers. However, always in private, never in public.

Well done SgtMaj!! In my opinion he should have escorted both Marines outside for further education!

It never should have escalated. The mother should have reminded her son to remove his cover before the Junior Officer ever arrived. However, I would have respectfully asked the SgtMaj to have those two boys stand at attention for me. Within 60 seconds the Junior Officer would have learned a valuable lesson, my son would not ever be able to have his cover on indoors without his skin crawling and the SgtMaj would, despite his best efforts, crack a smile when nobody was looking. If that mother did not possess those skills, she should have stepped out of the way and kept her mouth shut.
My son would not have dared to act that way outside of my sight much less in my presence. The failure of manners alone would have flown like a lead balloon with me. Of course, I am a Navy mom, my husband is ex-Army and my family has a history of service going all the way back to the American Revolution. Therefore, I probably have a little different perspective than that young man's mother.
